Grace Potter and the Nocturnals will perform at this year's Sundance Film Festival in Utah, Jan. 28 and Jan. 29. The New England rootsy rock band is among the artists playing this year's ASCAP songwriting showcase there. What with a third album already recorded and due for release on Hollywood Records this spring, the band has been airing some new songs during their short winter tour, which included playing with Government Mule in Jamaica before hitting snowy New England for a low-key club spree. "We've started to break out some new songs," Potter tells Spinner. "Just one or two here and there, slowly building up. By the time we get to Sundance, we'll have this whole new catalogue rehearsed that we've never played before. It's going to be an interesting setting too. It's not a rock show -- it's more of a café setting, more laid-back."
As much as Potter is thrilled to be playing the ASCAP showcase, the self-confessed "film head" is excited to wander Park City and take in some movies. "I've been on the website all morning, looking at what screenings to go to," she says. "I'm pretty sure we're pretty low when it comes to access. There's no sense of entitlement here. Film festivals to me are like Disneyland. It's really enjoyable and fascinating to take it all in. I'm such a gear-head with that kind of thing. Just to be able to walk down the street and know the community, I'm just in awe."
Surprisingly, the Vermont native hasn't seen the number one box office hit and Golden Globe winner, 'Avatar.' "No, I haven't seen it yet. I'm a little freaked out by the blue people," she says. "But everybody I talk to who has seen it says it's life changing, so I'm ready."
