Etta James Hospitalized With Infection
- Posted on Jan 29th 2010 1:40PM by Dan Reilly
R&B legend Etta James has been hospitalized in Southern California with an infection, her son, Donto, told Los Angeles news station KTLA. The 72-year-old 'At Last' singer has been recuperating for nearly a week at Riverside Community Hospital after developing sepsis from a urinary tract infection.Sadly, Donto James also revealed that his mother has spent the past month in a treatment for a dependency to painkillers and over-the-counter medicine. Etta has a history of problems with drugs, including a long battle with heroin that she didn't fully kick until she was 50.
James is expected to be released from the hospital soon. Donto said that she has been "battling for her life and sanity" and may be developing Alzheimer's. Last year, she criticized Beyonce, who portrayed James in 'Cadillac Records,' for covering 'At Last' at President Obama's inauguration, a controversy that Donto said most likely stemmed from her poor condition. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Along with her barriers and challenges, God gave her THAT voice! LOVE YOU ETTA!
True enough, Ms James is "just a singer" - she didn't cure anything, didn't invent anything, she just sang. And, OMG does she ever!
We're praying for you Jamesetta! Don't let this get you...you've been through worse, honey!
As an Aussie, who looked at this site today, becauses I am a true follower of this talennted lady, I cannot believe the trite comments I read, made about Ms James - her family, her racial heritage, whether she was good or bad etc etc etc....
What gives you people the right to make judgements about this lady. It is not your business!
Her music and stage pesona, her wonderful soul and blues interperetations of fabulous songs and her truly individual self is what is 'the thing'.
God its 2010!! Gees isnt it time you Americans got over all of this underlying racism!!!
My love to Miss James and her concerned family-keep strong.
Infection? New terminology for druggie in rehab? Why people worship and make role models out of these druggies is beyond reasoning.

KING'S CLUB AND SEARCH THE SIDEWALK OUTSIDE. THERE YOU WILL SEE WHAT I SAW..HER FAMOUS NAME ETCHED IN THE SIDEWALK FOR ALL TO REMEMBER HER AND THE OTHER BIG NAMES IN BLUES. HOWEVER, I DIDN'T NOTICE YOUR NAME THERE.....

January 30 2010 at 8:11 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLets be real...Etta James is an Icon & "At Last" IS "Her Signature Song"; no matter what her condition, she should have been considered first and foremost to perform the song...an oversight, which in my opinion, left her feeling justifiably disrespcted. And her reaction to this "neglect" showed the world that she is still full of life and fire. Generations of LOVE goes out to you LADY ETTA!

I and all of my students wish you a speedy and full recovery. Most of them sing At Last as a tribute to you and your wonderful artistry. You are an American treasure, and a force in the world. Blessings are being sent from everyone who loves you and your music. Be strong, and be well.
Besides just flat knocking down the blues no one can sing a jazz song the way Etta can! Miss your amazing original Roots band also, Love you always, God speed, and I hope to see you again.
