Broken Social Scene's rabidly anticipated new album may not have a title yet, but it's finally got a release date: May 4, 2010.It's been almost five years since their self-titled third album and in the intervening years many members of the Toronto collective have gone on to great success with solo efforts and assorted outside projects while Broken Social Scene's breakthrough album 'You Forgot It In People' was remembered on many a decade-end list.
But over the past few months, the sprawling group has been gathering in the Chicago studios of Tortoise's John McEntire.
Band leaders Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning brought together the current core line-up -- Justin Peroff, Charles Spearin, Andrew Whiteman, Sam Goldberg and Lisa Lobsinger -- with the group's illustrious alumni, including Feist, Stars' Amy Millan and Evan Cranley, Metric's Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw, Jason Collett and others.
There are some newcomers in the liner notes this time, too.
Not surprisingly, McEntire joins in along with the Sea and Cake's Sam Prekop, Pavement's Spiral Stairs, ex-Death From Above 1979 member Sebastian Grainger, Poi Dog Pondering's Susan Bells, Helen Money's Alison Chesley and the Weakerthans' Jason Tait.
Perhaps as a reaction to criticism that the previous record was overproduced, BSS decided to leave town for the first time in their recording career and co-produce the record with McEntire in Chicago. The results, they say, are "more cohesive, melody-driven compositions than previous BSS output."
We'll get to find out for ourselves soon enough. Broken Social Scene will debut the new material this March at South-by-Southwest before heading out on a Spring tour.
