'Saturday Night Live' funnyman Andy Samberg has won an Emmy award for a musical collaboration with Justin Timberlake and recorded an album with his Lonely Island band that featured T-Pain, Timberlake, Norah Jones, the Strokes' Julian Casablancas and more. Now Samberg and Lonely Island bandmate Akiva Schaffer have finally been recognized for their first love, thanks to a Grammy nomination for 'I'm on a Boat' in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the track lost to Jay-Z's 'Run This Town'). "Yeah, we're saying we're wearing sunglasses 'cause we're officially musicians today," Samberg told Spinner on the red carpet of the Grammys. "We finally got recognized as what we really are, which is rock stars, not comedians."
Well, so there, among their peers, who were Samberg and Schaffer most excited to see? "We're definitely excited to see Santana because we're definitely in the same category as him. We're now equal, both Grammy-nominated. That's pretty much the same," Schaffer said. "It was awesome to see Weird Al. He's our hero," Samberg added.
Now, we have another important question. Officially having graduated to rock stars with their Grammy nod, Samberg and Schaffer must possess the secret to rock stardom. What is the key? "You gotta just not give a frick. Just throw frick to the wind and be like, 'Frick it.' That's the main thing," Samberg said. "That's our creed," Schaffer added.
With their music career on a roll, a Grammy nomination and an album under their belts, where do they go from here? "We would love to tour. We're trying to figure out if we can get the schedules to work," Schaffer said. If they can pull it off, we expect some pretty great special guests to join them on stage.
