With all of the twists and unanswered questions surrounding 'Lost,' it can be fairly easy to lose track of plot details, especially when it's been a while since the last season aired. That's where Previously on Lost, a group of musicians devoted entirely to writing songs about the television program, come in. The band took its "recap rock" to the Bell House in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Feb. 2 to get a sold-out crowd excited for the season six premiere of the hit ABC show and to remind them of what exactly went down on seasons past. The night was filled with anticipation for the new episode, and the venue was themed for the occasion. Boarding tickets, which doubled as raffle tickets for prizes later on, were given to attendees, leis were handed out and island punch and Dharma Initiative beer were served.
"We are as excited as you. I woke up this morning feeling really new, really good, because of television," Previously on Lost co-founder and co-singer Jeff Curtin said as the band took the stage and warmed up to R. Kelly's 'I Believe I Can Fly,' to inspire a large cardboard airplane to be launched above the heads of those watching.
Previously on Lost then launched into their own tunes, starting with recaps of season four, because -- as co-frontman Adam Schatz said -- "that's when things really started happening." The band started the set with 'We're Goin' Home,' an upbeat, catchy song inspired by the 'Lost' cast's hopeful outlook about getting off the island. But Curtin, Schatz and Co. weren't the only focal points on stage.
"We're going to bring out a very special guest. You know him as the creator of all that is good ... J.J. Abrams!" Schatz announced, as a large poster of the 'Lost' creator appeared.
The group continued on to perform 'Ballad of Sayid Jarrah,' an ode to the 'Lost' character of the same name, and 'Male Role Model,' a track that takes on the perspective of one of the characters 'Lost' fans perhaps know least: Claire's baby, Aaron.
"[He's] probably the most confusingly developed and best-acted role on 'Lost,'" Schatz said. "Of course we're talking about baby Aaron. Who knows where he's going. Who knows what he's thinking. We're gonna tell you what he was thinking."
'Male Role Model' was followed by 'Be My Constant,' 'Wherever Sun Go' and 'The Island Won't Let You Die,' songs about 'Lost' characters Desmond and Penelope, Sun and Jin and Michael and Walt, respectively.
With only 20 minutes to go until the 'Lost' season finale was to start, the group went into a two-minute tune to bring the audience completely up-to-date with the plot of 'Lost.' This was followed by a song they wrote about the season five finale -- which was actually commissioned by ABC, as seen in the video below -- and, finally, a group singalong of the lyrics "I once was found/But now I'm lost/And all my friends are dead" while the cardboard rendition of the Oceanic 815 airliner was lowered to the ground.
