D-M.A.U.B. Interview: SXSW 2010

Holy hip hopper D-M.A.U.B. has a name that says it all: Dedicated to Making All Underestimaters Believers. With six albums to his name, he has also scored tracks on video games including 'Grand Turismo 4,' 'NBA Jam' and 'MLB 2005.' Spinner recently spoke with Donny "D-M.A.U.B." Harper about his music and his calling to the ministry.
What does D-M.A.U.B. sound like?
It's kind of hard for me to describe my sound because it switches regularly. I like to be challenged in my craft. That pushes me to look for different sounds, different production methods and ways to write. That in turn changes my delivery and style.
How did D-M.A.U.B. come to be?
I began writing and recording at the age of 10. Music has always been a part of who I am.
What is the craziest thing you have seen while on tour?
One time I had to minister in Cleveland, and as soon as we got of the car and popped the trunk to get merchandise, about 30 yards away somebody was getting jumped by two guys in the middle of the street! After they beat him up, everybody went their separate ways like nothing ever happened. All I could think about was, "Welcome to Cleveland!"
What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
I hope to inspire people to grow in Jesus. I want people to desire to become closer to God through my lifestyle and messages in my music. I want to start a clothing line and do different things to give back to my city.
What has been your happiest moment or biggest achievement so far?
My biggest achievement so far is securing a national distribution deal through DMG with the Universal Music Christian Group. My happiest moments are when I see people encouraged to do better in their walk with the Lord.
What is one thing you have learned over the years?
Patience. Patience is one of those things that is hard to practice without having some knowledge of who God is and what his character shows us throughout the Bible. Patience is faith in action. Patience is the action that shows physically that you are believing God to work out your situation and that you have total faith in trusting Him to do so by not complaining but being self-controlled during the process.
