After being awarded a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys on Jan. 31, Leonard Cohen will be one of this year's inductees into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Producer and composer David Foster, composer Johnny Mandel, singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon and Earth, Wind and Fire members Maurice White, Philip Bailey and Verdine White are among the other honorees. Ex-Earth, Wind and Fire members Al McKay and Larry Dunn will also be recognized.
The 75-year-old singer-songwriter, musician, novelist and poet is best known for his hit song, 'Hallelujah,' which has been covered over 2,000 times and was recently performed by k.d. Lang at the Vancouver Olympics' opening ceremonies and by Matt Morris and Justin Timberlake at the 'Hope for Haiti' telethon.
After being on hiatus for over a decade, Cohen returned to the stage and played about 200 shows worldwide since 2008. He recently postponed his European tour due to a back injury.
The Songwriter Hall of Fame will honor the new inductees in New York on June 17.

I am so glad he has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. I cried when I heard him sing the sone he wrote Hallelujah.

It's sad and ironic whenever an original version performed by its composer is a song's worst rendering, but Leonard Cohen is plenty sad and ironic in his writing, so why not in his singing?
