'Peaches Christ Superstar' Halted by German Authorities

Peaches' one-woman adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, 'Jesus Christ Superstar,' scheduled to open in Berlin, Germany on March 25 has been shut down. The self-proclaimed "bad girl of electro punk" had previously announced that she would perform a reworked version of the entire rock opera, accompanied only by pianist Chilly Gonzales."The German authorities who hold the rights [to] 'Jesus Christ Superstar' will not grant Peaches permission to perform any music from the original musical," reads a statement issued through multiple consecutive tweets via @peachesnisker. "Authorities claim that this project is of no interest to them due to its unconventional form, and therefore not a single song from the original musical shall be used in this production."
If you read that carefully, it sounds like the door is still open for Peaches to work around that obstacle during the three-night run. As of now, those shows are not actually canceled. Prior to this development, Peaches posted the following to her Fanbridge page: "When I was sixteen I often sang the whole musical to myself, all alone in my room ... I'm a performer, my concerts are extravagant and play with exaggerations. This project allows me to do without all this. I want to confront this task totally exposed because it is a possibility. It's a question of stamina."
If you know anything about Peaches, you know that this story is not over just yet. It's hard to imagine that 'Peaches Christ Superstar' won't rise again, somehow, somewhere. Stay tuned.
