With inspirations from traditional East African folk, Western Classical and Central African pop, the musical artist referred to only as Somi stands out in a musical crowd. The Zambia-raised woman now resides in New York City, where she is eager to share her talent of making music and writing lyrics with the world. Somi, who is performing at this year's SXSW, says each performance is a challenge to set herself free. And, so long as she has an audience in front of her that allows her to be free, she's happy.
Describe the sound of your music in your own words.
I would call it a conversation between jazz, soul and East African folk-futurism.
When did you decide to start making music?
As long as I can remember, I've been making some sort of music. I don't remember when exactly I began singing, but I began playing the cello at 8 years old, and I began writing poetry and songs soon after that .
What kind of music inspired you growing up? Any current influences?
I was deeply inspired by the music my parents surrounded me with. Mostly vintage Central African pop music, traditional East African folk, and Western Classical music. As I began to delve into my own musical exploration, I started listening to a lot of the great voices of African song and American jazz: Miriam Makeba, Sarah Vaughn, Cesaria Evora, Nina Simone.
What is your biggest vice?
My biggest vice would have to be my weakness for morning smoothies. Does that count?
What is your on tour survival kit?
A stash of peppermint tea, my laptop, a gym bag, an eye mask and a photograph of my parents' wedding.
Any notable awards?
Two years ago, I was 1st runner up in the World Music category of the BMI John Lennon Songwriting competition. I have also been recognized by ASCAP as an Emerging Young Songwriter.
What's the best part of performing in front of a live audience?
They challenge you to set yourself completely free.
What's your biggest accomplishment thus far?
Probably my ability to survive in New York City through art and music. I'm thankful for that every day.
Halloween or St. Patrick's Day?
Halloween!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully showing up in any city in the world and always finding a room packed with strangers ready to set me free.
