Rolling Stones to Reissue 'Exile on Main Street' With Unheard Tracks
- Posted on Mar 1st 2010 7:08AM by Chris Mugan
'Exile on Main Street', the Rolling Stones' classic 1972 album, is set to be reissued with an additional 10 previously unheard tracks. An announcement on the Stones' official website explains the new material was recorded during the long gestation period of 'Exile...', beginning in1968. New songs include 'Plundered My Soul,' 'Dancing in the Light,' 'Following the River' and 'Pass The Wine,' while the package also includes alternate versions of album tracks 'Soul Survivor' and 'Loving Cup.' Mick Jagger told Rolling Stone magazine that he unearthed the tracks for the reissue at the record company's request, then the singer and Keith Richards tweaked them slightly.
Accompanying the release of 'Exile...' is a new documentary, 'Stones in Exile,' to be shown on network television in the US and through BBC Worldwide internationally.
Produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker John Battsek and directed by Stephen Kijak, the documentary features never-before-seen archival film, photos and interviews, as well as conversations with the band and artists they have influenced. Richards said of the early footage, "I must not have noticed all the cameramen while I was making the record. I was amazed at how much footage they actually found."
The 'Exile...' reissue will be available on May 17 in the UK and May 18 in the US in three versions, as a CD with the original 18 tracks; as a deluxe CD edition with the bonus tracks; and in a super deluxe package including vinyl, documentary DVD and a collector's book.

GREAT STORY SUPER BEE, I was at the Madison Square Garden Concert made famous in the movie "Gimme Shelter". It was Thanksgiving night 1969. Ike & Tina Turner and either BB King or Chuck Berry opened for them. I'm sure about the Turners, the rest is sort of a Mescaline induced "BLUR".LOL What did stick, was the fact that the Stones were no where near as entertaining on stage as the were in the studio. I was very disappointed. Keep in mind I was used to going to the Fillmore East and for some reason most groups brought their "A Game" The first time I saw Jimi Hendricks in the Fillmore, I walked out not knowing what I saw, but KNOWING it was an exhibition in perfection. Even the opening act was impressive at those shows. (Jimis opener that time was Sly and the Family Stone) I saw Jimi twice after that, but the first was BY FAR the best. Anyway, seeing the STONES being "out done by groups like Jefferson Airplane and Creedence Clearwater Revival" was quite a disappointment for someone who thought them better than the Beatles. Also the fact that the MAYSELS BROTHERS and their crumby flood lights panning the audience every other minute or so, did nothing to improve the enviornment. All the indoor concert shots in the movie, Gimme Shelter were shot at the show I attended.

Most people can't go into an "orhasmic" state, so most settle for an orgasmic one. And of course, "TRY to mount a stage." should have been, "trying to mount etc." Thank you all for NOT pointing out the fact that I'm NOT PERFECT and allowing me the illusion that, "I am." lol

But there comes a time (especially in Rock n Roll) to say, "FAREWELL" and for the Stones THAT time has long past. Call "Exile" Iconic, classic or whatever you wish (I call it, "going to well, once too often.")BUT it's far from their best and they should have stopped after "Let it Bleed". Even the Stones would "MOCK" 70 YEAR OLD MEN, mounting a stage and try to send the female members of the audience into a state of swooning orhasmic overload (no pun intended). Someone needs to tap either Mick or Keith on the shoulder (not too hard, old bones are brittle) and shout into their "good ear" or failing THAT their hearing aid and point out that Rock N Roll is better left to the kids. The "old folks" can still listen, but they've gotta, "Turn it up."

While I have the original Exile, I will get this one as well for the unreleased tracks! The Rolling Stones rock. Their music stands the test of time and is still good today as it was years ago!! The Stones were important in my life. Like any kid I was enthralled when the Beatles came on Ed Sullivan and rocked the world, but it was several months later when Ed Sullivan had the Rolling Stones on that my world got rocked. I may have been 10, but I knew great music back then too!!! Rock on Rolling Stones, give me more because "I can't get no satisfaction." But I've tried!!

Got some crazies that read that article about Exile. Great album. Those other guys need to go back to listening to Justin Beiber.
Glad to know about the re-release. New ears will find the recording. It's exciting to get a new release that has new material, mastering, various formats and all that. In my opinion, record companies should be doing this a lot.

May 13 2010 at 7:35 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTHE reason the sones are still together is because they have to be. Stones solo albums (cds) can't compare in any way to ANY of the solo BEATLES. John's "Imagine", Paul's "Band On The Run", George's "All Things Must Pass", and even Ringo's "Ringo" cd. Every Beatle, working solo, has more #1's than the stones. Not even close!!
May 11 2010 at 8:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI just listened to "Plundered My Soul" on Lala.com.. pretty cool song.. although I think when they say "tweaked them slightly" they mean new vocal tracks. The lead vocal is doubled up.. the louder one sounds suspiciously much like Mick's current singing style. Especially in comparison to the many book leg unreleased 1968 - 1972 tracks that have been available for years.
I hadn't heard this particular tune though.. and I got to admit. it's pretty good. I can see why it wasn't included in Sticky Fingers or Exile.. it's not that strong but on it's own it's a good listen.
