Peelander-Z Interview: SXSW 2010

In case there was concern that the world of music was going to die from a case of chronic seriousness, Peelander-Z are here to save planet Earth. They are not American. They are not Japanese. They are not human -- they claim to hail from the Z area of Planet Peelander -- and they are here to eat your smiles. The New York-based Japanese action-comic punk band is still on the hunt for a label but has laid down five full-length albums, a self-titled mini-album and two split 7-inches. The members of the trio -- bearing the color-coded names Peelander Yellow, Green and Red -- took time out from their limbo dancing, human bowling and Technicolor wrestling to tell Spinner how everyone is invited onstage with them at their SXSW show.

Describe your sound.

Peelander Yellow: Just think of going on a picnic with your best friends. Of course, it is so much fun! You'll begin to hum a tune. That's our sound.

Peelander Green: Chaos!

So your name, Peelander-Z, comes from your planet?

Y: What does "Earth" means? Peelander is Peelander.

G: I really have no idea.

What do you do different from human bands?

Y: Don't think. Feeeeeeeeeel!!!

G: Stay stylish!

Peelander Red: Having fun with everybody! Smile!

Do you have musical influences?

Y: I don't care about music. I just wanna play as a kindergartner with everyone.

G: Motorhead!

R: Jackson 5.

Biggest vice?

Y: So many girlfriends.

G: Fake smile.

R: Addicted to peanuts.

Who was your first celeb crush?

Y: Sophie Marceau! Do you know her?

G: Marky Ramone.

R: Rolling Stones!

OK, so, Beatles or Stones?

Y: Stones Beatles or Beatless Stones.

G: The Who!

R: Stones!

A crazy thing that happened on tour?

Y: My front teeth was broken at Bonnaroo Music Fest in 2004.

G: I got a girlfriend on tour. We already broke up, though.

R: Yellow broke his own teeth by himself with his guitar.

What's in your kit to survive SXSW?

Yellow: Banana and girls who wear glasses.

Green: Red Bull.

Red: Unsalted peanuts.

Any hints about what we can expect to see in Austin?

Y: You might see a huge red squid. You might see [Peelander] Pink. You might see Bowling Pin Man.

G: It's gonna be awesome!

R: Yes. Anybody can come up on our stage to play our instruments while we jump off the stage, having fun with you.

What was the best Peelander-Z performance?

Y: A show at Belmont Park [horse racing track in New York]. We performed without any equipment because we're too loud for horses. It was so much fun.

G: Every show is my favorite.

R: Shows at SXSW! There are many spots to climb and jump or hang upside-down
