You won't get many serious answers from the New Zealand foursome Bang Bang Eche, but you will get some seriously high-energy electro/punk/dance/rock/whatever-you-want-to-call-it performances. The four scrappy youngsters that make up the band are the singer/non-religious motivational speaker Zach Doney, bassist and overlady T'Nealle Worsley, guitarist with excellent musical taste Charlie Ryder and drummer/beats-maker James Sullivan. They only came together as a band in 2007, but have already had quite a run. In addition to touring all over the world, they've had multiple radio hits in New Zealand and Australia and their first single from 2009's 'Sonic Death C--ttt' EP was named Song of the Day by the venerable NME and KEXP. Before he heads off to SXSW, Spinner recently caught up with front man Zach and nearly sprayed deli coffee out of our collective nose.Describe your sound in your own words.
T'Nealle wanted to be in a punk band and Charlie wanted to be in Daft Punk or something and James wanted to get brutalz and I wanted to get into the non-religious version of motivational speaking and one day we started a band. Wait, this might be better as the answer to the next question.
How did your band form?
See above.
What are your musical influences?
That sick feeling you have when the sun comes up at 6:00 am or so and you've been at work since 3:30.
How did you come up with your band name?
We stole it off this Australian band called Bang Bang AIDS who are/were really good but broke up because we stole their name.
What's your biggest vice?
Crack.
What's in your festival survival kit?
See above.
What's the craziest thing you've seen or experienced while on tour?
This German girl comes onto this kebab bus we were buying things from and goes, "Do any of you have a cigarette?" Me: "Sorry, we only smoke c--- around here." Her: "I'll suck all your d---- for a cigarette!" But then when I chased her she got all weird about it. Weird.
Who was your first celeb crush?
When I was little, I would watch mainstream anime with 14-year-old Japanese kids in giant robots and I think I fell in love with one of them. But I don't know if that counts, so maybe the chick lion from ''The Lion King.'
What's your musical guilty pleasure?
Charlie doesn't understand guilt. Here is a typical music session for him: Taylor Swift, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Aliyah, Beyoncé, Five, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Bic Runga, Bonnie Tyler, Madonna (again) then the entire Bloc Party discography, but skipped through for "just the good bits." Perhaps that's a bit mean, but to his credit he HATES Lady Gaga. I kind of like her (but not her bridges). No one has better videos though except for that Taylor Swift video that might give her a run for her money just for being better than any teen movie and all in three and a half minutes.
Beatles or Stones?
I f---ing hate the Beatles and the Rolling Stones are just a band as far as I can tell, but what I hate more than those two bands are fans of those two bands. Die in a fire.
What bands are you looking forward to seeing at SXSW?
Any band that lists Led Zeppelin as an influence. Maybe some Pantera cover bands or something.
