Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Saul Williams -- they've all responded to the new music industry by releasing music on their own terms. This growing list of artists (all "doing a Radiohead," as the industry likes to call it), is now joined by Jonsi Birgisson, who fronts Icelandic audio magicians Sigur Ros in his day job.Having announced the release details of his album 'Go' due Apr. 5 (Apr. 6 in America), Jonsi is sticking to the new proven format of releasing a limited-edition box set alongside a digital edition. Spinner has previously reported that the album will include contributions from artists including Grizzly Bear and New York composer Nico Muhly.
The cloth-bound, velvet-lined limited edition box will include a download link, a CD, a full length DVD of Jonsi performing an acoustic set of the album filmed by Dean Deblois (director of the Sigur Ros documentary 'Heima'), and Nico Muhly joins Jonsi in a downloadable performance in east London's Bethnal Green. The package will be topped off with "more surprise goodies," and is available for pre-order for £25/$35 + shipping.
Jonsi last hit the Spinner headlines last week, when he proclaimed that British TV had "raped" the music of Sigur Ros.
A preview of the film 'Go Quiet' is up for your viewing pleasure now. Director Dean Deblois elaborates: "Jonsi awakens to a trashed house ... He avoids cleaning up and instead procrastinates by playing songs that reflect the night before." A normal Sunday, then.
