St. Vincent Provides Guitar Work on New Pornographers' 'Together'

With a guitar style that's rougher and more abstract than most in the indie universe, St. Vincent's Annie Clark has been making fans both bob and scratch their heads for years now. One of those fans recently figured that Clark's spacey guitar could add some depth to a decidedly poppy act -- the New Pornographers. As recently reported, Clark added some guitar lines to the indie supergroup's new album, the upcoming 'Together.' "Phil [Palazzolo, the producer of 'Together'] is a friend of mine, and I've been a fan of the New Pornographers and Neko Case and A.C. Newman for a long time," Clark tells Spinner. "It was really casual. Phil just texted me and said 'Hey, we're working on a song and I think you'd be really cool on it. Come on over."
Clark jumped at the opportunity. "I hopped in a cab with my little guitar rig and went to the studio [in Brooklyn]. It was only three hours, or even just an hour," she says. "The whole thing was very mellow."
'Together,' the Pornographer's fifth studio album, will also include indie staples Will Sheff of Okkervil River and Beirut's Zach Condon. Though Clark couldn't share too many details, it's safe to say she's already a champion of the album.
"['Together' has] just great songs and really catchy melodies. I haven't heard the whole record, but I still get some of the songs stuck in my head all the time," she says. "And that's a really good sign."
'Together' is due May 4 on Matador.
