Members of the New York City rock band The Dig have been playing together in some form since they were in their early teens. After a rigorous touring schedule throughout '08 and '09, the Dig took to recording their first full-length album, 'Electric Toys,' which is slated for a release this April. Spinner caught up with the Dig in advance of the band's SXSW 2010 appearance.
How would you describe your sound?
The best words to describe our music would have to be rock 'n' roll.
How did your band form?
Two of the members, David and Emile, grew up playing music together in New York, and met Erick jamming out in a guitar center in Boston when they were 15. After years of playing in different bands, the three moved to New York City and met Jamie, who was playing in different bands. And he was coerced into joining the Dig.
What are your musical influences?
Lead Belly, Roy Orbison, Beck, John Lee Hooker and the Eagles of Death Metal.
How did you come up with your band name?
A movie called 'DiG!'
What's your biggest vice?
Chronic masturbation.
Who was your first celeb crush?
A.C. Slater.
What's your musical guilty pleasure?
Dave Matthews and Gloria Estefan.
What's the craziest thing you've seen or experienced while on tour?
The "double-assed woman" dancing on the boardwalk of Venice Beach[, Calif.]
What key moment made you feel that the band had really made it?
Not sure, but I bet it will feel good if it ever happens.
Who or what kind of people would you recommend listening to your music?
Children, teenagers, adults and old people.
