For the second straight year, Lovvers will be bringing their lo-fi punk rock to SXSW. Still jamming on tour after their October 2009 release 'OCD Go Go Go Girl,' Lovvers will attempt to play 12 shows in four days in Austin. Spinner recently spoke with the Nottingham, England band to see what makes them tick.
How did you come up with your band name?
It was kicking about for awhile from an old band we had played in. The two "Vs" were added to make it interesting. Two and a half years later, it pretty much renders us a joke band. We've been recently thinking we should kill it and drop the "O" and the "E" to try and gain some self-respect. As of now we still have those two "Vs"!
What are your musical influences?
We all listen to varied stuff, but for the most part bands and labels like the Damned, Buzzcocks, KBD, Back to the Grave, In The Red, Matador Records, Sire and Goner Records are our biggest influences.
Describe your sound.
Like a baby making love to a gorilla wearing a Ramones shirt.
Have you played at SXSW before? What's in your survival kit?
Yeah, we went last year. I would say we don't need a lot, just be prepared to live on pizza, drink a lot, walk a lot, get sunburned, not sleep and watch some great bands.
What's the craziest thing you've experienced on tour?
We see something crazy every day, from disabled kids throwing dogs, people relieving themselves in places they shouldn't and dead people on sidewalks.
Beatles or Stones?
Beatles! The Beatles went out on top without making any bad records. The Stones are still embarrassing themselves, playing badly, making millions a year when they should have grown old gracefully. Also, George Harrison was in the Beatles, and we think he was pretty cool.
