Male Bonding Interview: SXSW 2010

After two years of endlessly successful independent 7 inch and tape releases, London's Male Bonding recently signed to the legendary label Sub Pop Records. Attending SXSW for the first time on Sub Pop's roster they'll be bringing their own specific brand of lo-fi party punk. Spinner fired some quick questions to drummer Robin Silas Christian.

Can you describe your sound in your own words for us?

Melodic, noisy, sometimes with cowbells. It's pretty basic.

So how did the band form?

We kept saying "lets do a band", and then we ended up living together. When we finally tried it, it was easy and fun. So we made space to do it more.

What are your musical influences?

[1970s New Jersey all-sister folk rock trio] the Roches.

How did you come up with your band name?

It came to John.

What's in your festival survival kit?

Pyjamas and acid.

Who was your first celeb crush?

Anna Chlumsky from the film 'My Girl', the one where Macaulay Culkin gets bitten by bees and dies. I think I must have been around nine years old.

What's your musical guilty pleasure?

The Connells, but we're not guilty about it.

Beatles or Stones?

[Neither, we prefer] the Beach Boys.

What's the craziest thing you've seen or experienced while on tour?

Someone threw a burrito at Kevin last year him -- he dodged it by jumping in the road and nearly got run over.
