Cherie Currie Praises Dakota Fanning's Performance in 'The Runaways'
When actress Dakota Fanning was slated to play Runaways' lead singer Cherie Currie in the upcoming film about the rise of the '70s legendary all-girl rock band and based on Currie's autobiography 'Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway,' you'd think that Currie would have known before Fanning signed the deal. But apparently she learned about it while watching the local news. "Well, I found out about it on the Channel Five news with [KTLA newscaster] Sam Rubin," Currie tells Spinner. "And my knees buckled because Dakota Fanning is my favorite actress of all time."
Making sure that Fanning was prepared for the role, Currie invited the young actress into her home where Fanning learned what life as a Runaway was like, rehearsed every song and even practiced the stage tricks Currie used to do on stage. "Working with her was such a pleasure," Currie says. "We spent a lot of time together, and she came to my house. We ran the songs line by line, back and forth. She worked so hard."
Although Currie may have been the first one to work the mic the way she did during 'Cherry Bomb,' she admits that Dakota actually mastered the choreography better than she did. "She had my moves down so well," Currie says. "Actually I had her change something in 'Cherry Bomb,' a turn, but she was right. I was wrong. She's just brilliant."
The support didn't end there. Currie and Runaways bandmate Joan Jett made sure they both were available to Fanning and Kristen Stewart, who plays Jett in the film, to help them out whenever they needed it during the moviemaking process. "[Joan and I] were at all the rehearsals," Currie said. "We gave them everything that we could, and we were on set for them at any time, day or night. It was great."
Pleased with Fanning's performance, Currie, who's also a well-renowned chainsaw wood carver, surprised the teen actress with a custom-made 'Runaways' guitar. "I carved a guitar for Dakota Fanning for her 16th birthday, and that took me a long amount of time because it had to be perfect," Currie says.
'Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway' releases on March 16. 'The Runaways' will hit theaters in limited release on March 19 and nationwide on April 9.
