- Posted on Mar 12th 2010 8:17AM by Wendy Gould
The Jones Family Singers are a gospel group made up entirely of family (hence the name). The group includes Fred A. Jones, pastor and father of all five daughters and a son who perform in the ensemble. Jones Family Singers also includes Jones' grandson and son-in law. Each member of the band adds their own bit of flavor to the group, but they all have one mission: to share the gospel with an appreciative audience. Spinner got the chance to speak with the head of the group, Fred Jones [before their performance at this year's SXSW. Describe the sound of your music in your own words.
Traditional gospel with a contemporary flair that will have you dancing, shouting and praising.
When and how did your group form?
The group formed in the family over 25 years ago in Sweeny, Texas. Three generations of great singers performing together.
Do you have any current musical influences?
Not really, although many people liken [youngest daughter] Alexis to Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples. Bishop Jones is likened to Julius Cheeks of the world famous Swan Silverstones.
Describe the dynamic of the Jones Family Singers.
Our dynamic includes our ability to harmonize, vocalize.
What are you looking forward to most about SXSW?
The fellowship even though there are different genre's available there. We're also looking forward to meeting and making new friends and fans. SXSW afford us that.
What sets your band apart from others?
Probably our ability to be different and genuinely have fun with the fans. We care about those we celebrate with and they know it.
What's your bands biggest accomplishment thus far?
So far, our biggest accomplishment was when we played for the Smithsonian Institute Folklife Festival in Washington D.C. We performed in front of thousands upon thousands and packed the auditorium night after night, even though the setting was not a religious one. We received the Texas Music Excellence Award and we were nominated for rhythm and gospel award. Also, the Houston Chronicle awarded us Most Noted Group Award, and we received the Who's Who Excellence Award in Washington D.C.
What is the JFS's ultimate goal, musically speaking?
To minister our music around the world. We also want to work with promoters and artists who love making people happy.
