Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody Sings With Dislocated Jaw for Eight Years
- Posted on Mar 12th 2010 4:45AM by Julian Marszalek
In what has to be one of the most bizarre ailments to have emerged from the crazy world of rock 'n' roll, Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody has revealed that he's been singing with a dislocated jaw for the last eight years. His condition only recently came to light when it became too painful for him to sing while recording his forthcoming solo album, 'Tired Portland.'Having taken a drunken tumble down a flight of stairs at the Arts School nightclub in Glasgow, the dislocated jaw remained undetected thanks to his abusive behaviour to hospital staff who didn't bother to X-ray the hapless singer because they wanted to get rid of him as soon as possible.
"I busted myself up pretty bad. My eye closed over like a beaten boxer and I lost some teeth, which I got replaced," he told the Daily Record.
"Waking up in a hospital bed with only one eye and the worst hangover I ever had is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
"Because of my previous night's behaviour to the nursing staff, the only thing they wanted was rid of me so there were no head X-rays taken. Let me be clear right now, I am not annoyed with the nurses at all. I am only ashamed of myself, not annoyed with them."
He continued, "A few years after that incident, my jaw started to get sore and has been a source of pain for years. I have seen all kinds of people about it. My mistrust of Western medicine meant, though, that never once did I get it X-rayed."

I think its great hes owning up to the way he acted but the wayhe was treated at that hospital was unacceptable. Those nurses are going to run into alot of people that are high or drunk and they may not like them or their actions but their job is to help them in EVERY way possible. Theyshould have taken better care of him! End of story! They are lucky hes not sueing them!

In a dislocated jaw, the condyle (the upper end of the mandible) jumps out of the glenoid fossa (the part of the temporal bone where the condyle is seated) and moves forward. The jaw must then be repositioned posteriorily in the fossa before you are able to close. There is no possibility of a lateral dislocation without a fracture.

March 13 2010 at 12:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI find this so interesting. I've never given a dislocated jaw much thought, but I wouldn't have thought you could chew and swallow with one. It took my computer forever to bring this up, but I was curious to know how someone COULDN'T know they had a dislocated jaw. Of course with rock 'n rollers, mind altering substances COULD explain anything! Ahh haa ha! Strange, but true.

What is really surprising is that the xrays were OF MY TEETH, not my jawbone. Besides tht if the patient isn't complaining you don't look. Now I have to wonder wtf you're getting whole head xrays. Life is too short to suffer fools.
March 13 2010 at 12:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUnless a panoramic x-ray was taken, there would be no view of the TM joint, which is the only position a dislocation could occur. That said, a dislocation without an actual bone fracture would leave an individual unable to close their mouth.

He didn't have to, but instead put it out there for someone to learn from it. The way some people find fault you'd think there was a reward!
