For casual music observers, Toronto's Still Life Still came out of nowhere in 2009, signing with revered label Arts & Crafts and releasing their much-loved debut, 'Girls Come Too.' But the band, or its core members at least, have been playing music together for nearly ten years. They were signed personally by Arts & Crafts head and Broken Social Scene founder Kevin Drew, appropriate considering the bands' relative sonic familiarity.
Still Life Still took a moment before heading off to SXSW to talk about their genesis, birthdays and their appreciation for '90s dance music.
Please describe your sound in your own words.
Shoegaze with a '90s vibe.
How did your band get together?
We met in grade school. None of us knew an instrument, but we each picked one, jammed during lunch and learned together.
What are you musical (and non-musical) influences?
Motown, Dance Mix '92, society, truth.
How did you come up with your band name?
It was originally a song title to do with birthdays and make-up.
What's your biggest vice?
Pondering my place in the universe.
What would you pack in your SXSW survival kit?
Our tour manager and best friend Markus.
What's your musical guilty pleasure?
There are no guilty musical pleasures to us. A good jam is a good jam.
What's the craziest thing you've seen or experienced while on tour?
It's just amazing feeling, touring -- receiving the vibes from a city, meeting amazing people and living how we've always wanted to live.
