Expect hot grooves, tight lyrics and full dance floors when Pase Rock takes the mic. Mixing techno, electronic and international influences, Pase, aka Patrick Vaughn, is a favorite of dance clubs and big-deal private parties from NYC to LA. Pase has DJed for Justin Timberlake, the Black Eyed Peas, Lindsay Lohan and Bjork among many others. Spinner caught up with Pase Rock before he brings his high-energy live show to Austin for SXSW 2010. Pase Rock is scheduled to perform at SXSW 2010 on Thursday, March 18 and Saturday, March 20.Describe your sound in your own words.
Schizophrenic party sex.
How did you begin your music career?
Trying to figure out how to scratch, emulating Jam Master Jay.
What and who are your influences?
Early rap, James Brown, Prince, Miles Davis, Malcolm X, Nikki Giovanni, Iceberg Slim.
What can you tell me about your name, Pase Rock?
I used to write PASE as a youngin' and my good friend Nujabes added the Rock permanently when he put my first record out.
What's your biggest vice?
Probably women.
What's in your SXSW survival kit?
Sleep.
Who was your first celeb crush?
Either Diana Ross, Daisy Duke or Lisa Bonet.
What's your musical guilty pleasure?
I don't really have any. The closest would be Jamiroquai. I am only slightly ashamed of liking it but not really.
Beatles or Stones? Why?
I think the Beatles were slightly more original, so I'll swing with that. Great songs win all the time.
What's the craziest thing you've seen or experienced while on tour?
Ronnie Darko.
What are your hopes and dreams for your SXSW appearance this year?
Nudity.
Why should SXSW attendees come to your showcase?
Because I'm fucking Pase Rock, helloooooo!
What kind of adventures do you usually get into on the road?
Sleep.
Where's your hometown and how's the local support for your band?
I don't really have a hometown. They kicked me out. But I think the five people that live there think I'm ok, so I'm good.
What are you doing when you're not making music?
Drowning in sorrow.
What's your dream venue -- where would you most like to perform?
In my bathroom and I perform there all the time.
