Roxy Cottontail is a club promoter, booker and DJ. During her upcoming stint at SXSW, Roxy will release her newest mixtape called 'Strike up the Band,' produced by Luther. Roxy recently caught up with Spinner to discuss her musical background, the new release and what fans can expect at her SXSW performances. How did you get started?
I stared making music while I was in high school actually. So I only have been performing, but I recently starting working in the last few years more with club, dance and more electro-house music. I had a punk band before when I was in high school and just have been experimenting with a lot of different [styles] and promoting night clubs and DJing like five years ago. I have been in that environment so much so the sound of the party has taken over my music.
When did you started performing as Roxy Cottontail?
About two or three years ago.
How would you describe your sound in your own words?
I've called it "electro disco nursery rap" music before it has taken on more club elements. I think more dance-y and it's now emo too, which I don't really know how to describe. Emo-electro. but it's all over the place actually. It's hard to describe.
What are your music influences?
I love Wendy O. Williams, and the Plasmatics and super punk but also I love the Go-Go's. Then I love Roxanne Shante, old school hip-hop like Delivery, and I just like dance music. So a lot of things influence me. That's why my music sounds like everything.
How did you come up with the name Roxy Cottontail?
It came from an obsession with bunnies and I also think that a cottontail is another word for ass or butt so I like to think of that, as my cute girl's bottom, as a cottontail. It comes from a lot of things.
What do you include in your festival survival kit?
Oh my goodness. Good shoes that don't hurt too much because I wear heels a lot, but you definitely cannot do that. You could wear like a platform wedge for girls that's not too high. Water and sunscreen too, depending on the weather.
What are you currently working on?
Actually I've been working on the mixtape in the last three weeks with this producer. His name is Luther. We are starting a label together for this year. He's amazing and the mixtape is a great representation of all the music that I wanted to do, but it's definitely electronic and there's one song that's actually like an emo cover at the end. Like a folk song, really cute, but I'm getting this printed and they get delivered to my hotel in Austin on Wednesday, I think.
Is your record label going to be signing other acts?
Yeah we are. Luther has some acts in mind that he wants to sign from London actually. I have ideas for producers and artists that I want to sign. I have discovered a lot of talent over the course of my career as a promoter and a DJ. It's just about time that I actually started signing all the talent that I discovered because I've been promoting for a long time so it just makes sense.
What would you say is your biggest vice?
I would say either food or working because I work so much. I like eating well and then I work so much that it could be seen as obsessive. I don't know. I am a perfectionist and I am never not done.
Who was your first celebrity crush?
I think it was Johnny Depp. I'm trying to think of any others. Michael Jackson was the first actually. When I was little, my concept, my perceptions were so off that I thought I was going to marry Michael Jackson and Madonna was going to be my baby. That's how obsessed I was and confused.
What would you say is your musical guilty pleasure?
I don't really feel guilty for liking anything, but I especially like Miley Cyrus unfortunately.
That 'Party in the U.S.A.' song is so addicting.
I know. Actually Kelly Clarkson because she was like the older version of Miley Cyrus and some of the songs are just, you can't help yourself.
What can a fan except from one of your SXSW shows?
Just to have a good time. I like to bring the party atmosphere that I have been a part of in New York City for so long. So just a good time and cute songs that are fun.
