Since Ryan Adams' split from his Cardinals band and married Mandy Moore, the alt-country genre's poster boy of the last 10 years is finally coming out of hiatus next week. But don't expect any acoustic guitars, harmonicas or the like. According to Adams' website, his next album will called 'Orion' and is said -- by him -- to be his "most legit METAL record" with vinyl copies going to press next week. Streaming on his site is the song 'Electrosnake,' a fast guitar jam with Adams' distinct vocals somewhere in there. This isn't the first time he's tried out a new formula -- for a brief spell in 2003-2004, Adams released a Replacements-inspired record called 'Rock N Roll' that was received poorly by both critics and fans alike, after Lost Highway reportedly rejected 'Love Is Hell,' his follow-up to 2001's 'Gold.' But since then, Adams went on to release a heavy dose of music, drawing on the Grateful Dead and more traditional country-leaning sounds with his band the Cardinals. Their last release was 2008's 'Cardinology' and he's been rather quiet since, aside from the occasional Internet musing.
Now free from label constraints, Adams is releasing 'Orion' via his own label, Paxam Recordings. No word as to whether or not digital folks will get a crack at it, but for longtime Adams fans, any new music might be a good thing -- even if Slayer is the primary, non-ironic influence.
