Soko Interview: SXSW 2010

French singer Soko may be a familiar face to those with a taste for French cinema. Stéphanie Sokolinski received a Cesar nomination recently for her role in the film 'A l'Origine' -- her latest role in an acting career that's been gathering pace for the last seven years. That's not why she'll be visiting Austin, however. Having already had an iTunes number one in Denmark in 2007 with the song 'I Kill Her', Soko is hoping the US will now sit up and take notice. Spinner spoke to her before her SXSW visit, and couldn't help thinking that she might need a hug.

Describe your sound in your own words.

Intimate, stories, heartbroken, punk ass.

How did your start music?

I don't know how to do anything else, and I was bored. And I have awful communication problems, so I had to write how I felt.

What are your musical influences?

Depression.

How did you come up with your stage name?

It's just my name!

What's your biggest vice?

I'm very straight edge, and healthy and vegan ... What are you talking about ?! I love people too much ... Is that a vice?

Who was your first celeb crush?

Elliott Smith.

What's your musical guilty pleasure?

Elliott Smith.

Beatles or Stones?

Eighty per cent Beatles.

What's the craziest thing you've seen or experienced while on tour?

Not having vegan food sucks. Beside that, touring is cool ... Everything is crazy. And I cry too much .
