Vince Mira Interview: SXSW 2010
Singer-songwriter Vince Mira is getting an early jump start on making his passions and dreams come true. At the young age of 15, Mira has had the opportunity to record his first full-length album, 'Cash Cabin Sessions' with the son of country-rock legend Johnny Cash in the cabin Cash built himself. He has a sound and aesthetic similar to his music idols Cash and Hank Williams, singing in a deep bass baritone voice about subject matter that continues in the legendary tradition. Born in 1992, Vince has already lived in three major cities [Los Angeles, San Antonio and presently Seattle] He has gained acclaim and notoriety from such celebrities as Ellen Degeneres and has collaborated with Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard on a Hank Williams tribute album. Spinner had the pleasure of talking with Vince before his trek out to Austin, Texas, where he will be showcased at this year's SXSW.Describe your sound in your own words.
I haven't really thought about it. Hm, I would have to say it's a bluesy type of music with a rock 'n' roll '60s sound.
At what age did you know you wanted to become a musician? Whats your ten year plan?
I started playing guitar at 11..With all the positive response I was getting, I didn't think of making it a career until I realized it seemed possible. In terms of a plan, I don't really have one. I'm just going to keep playing and see where it takes me.
Are you still in school? Does that affect touring or your performance schedule?
Yeah, still in school. One year left, but it doesn't really affect my music. I'm home schooled so the work can come along with me.
Aside from whats already noted [Johnny Cash and Hank Williams] what are your musical influences?
Well you know, old bluesy stuff. Lately a lot of the staples from the '60s and '70s era. Dylan, Janis, Jimi, the Doors and the Stones.
Are there any bands or artists you are looking forward to checking out at SXSW?
I haven't really looked into who's playing, so there's no real plan. I'm just gonna walk around and see what I like.
What's your biggest vice?
I don't really get into anything, unlike most normal teenagers I don't go out much. I mostly stay home and write and play music.
What's in your festival survival kit?
Basically, some water and my guitar. I lived in Texas before so I know what to expect. Yeah, just lots and lots of water and my guitar.
Who was your first celeb crush?
Oh wow, I dont know. Older ladies. I guess Marilyn Monroe. I like them dead [laughs].
Beatles or Stones?
I'd have to go with the Beatles.
Which era?
Definitely later, 'Sgt/ Peppers' and 'Yellow Submarine.' Not that the bubble gum stuff is bad, it's good. I just get into the more psychedelic side.
What's the craziest thing you've seen or experienced while on tour?
Wow. Nothing in the audience. If anything, once we broke a guitar on stage. It came to the end of the performance, it's pretty crazy for me. I'm not saying I'd do it again but it was pretty fun, we were in the moment.
And finally, what's your musical guilty pleasure?
I don't listen to the radio, so other than what's on my regular playlist, I like to listen to Billie Holiday at home. Her voice is so smooth.
