Sonny and the Sunsets Interview: SXSW 2010
- Posted on Mar 16th 2010 12:30PM by Will Justice
Sonny and the Sunsets make entertaining and at times humorous-sounding forms of beach pop. Their fans recommend them to people who already like groups such as Ganglians and Thee O Sees. Though their debut LP, 'Tomorrow is Alright,' was limited to 500 copies, it's an accomplishment that may be sought on eBay many years down the road. We're excited to see Sonny and The Sunsets play at SXSW. Spinner caught up with frontman Sonny Smith. How would you describe your sound in your own words?
Short, fast jams.
How did your band form?
Musicians hanging around together.
What are your musical influences?
The Corsairs.
How did you come up with your band name?
My name is Sonny. It felt right.
What's your biggest vice?
Drinking.
What's your musical guilty pleasure?
Impatience, like not tuning up all the time.
Who or what kind of people would you recommend listening to your music?
All people.
Who was your first celebrity crush?
First? I dunno. I had posters of Eddie Murphy on my wall when i was too young to know what he was talking about.
When and how did your musical career technically start?
Technically? I got a gig playing piano at a kind of corny piano bar-type place when I was 18.
What key moment made you feel that the band had really "made it"?
This interview.
What's your latest music-related accomplishment?
Same as always -- making little tunes come to life.
