Davide Combusti, a.k.a. the Niro, is a singer-songwriter born in Rome. In 2005 he opened for the Norwegian singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche in Rome and subsequently received scores of invitations to share the stage with international artists. Since then, Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr, has nothing but words of praise for him. His first release was a five track EP called 'An Ordinary Man' back in January 2008. In 2010 the Niro comes back in full swing with his full length debut album 'Best Wishes'. Spinner caught up with him ahead of his SXSW showcase.
Describe your sound in your own words.
It's a mix of songwriting with different influences, from cinematic moods to alternative indie rock. The heart of my music starts from my voice and guitar, and lands on a complex rhythmic bed, or on minimal suggestions.
How did your band form?
Actually the band is myself. When I record I play drums, bass, guitar, meanwhile when I perform live, I have my trusted musicians.
What are your musical influences?
I love inspired and talented souls like Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens, David Bazan, Badly Drawn Boy, Tim Buckley but I think that my strongest influence comes from cinema.
How did you come up with your name?
I wanted to give a sort of tribute to the movie world that I love so much.
What's your biggest vice?
I'm a left-handed man.
What's in your festival survival kit?
My guitar, my voice... and some underwear!
Who was your first celeb crush?
U2
Beatles or Stones?
Beatles
What's the craziest thing you've seen or experienced while on tour?
I opened for Deep Purple with a classic guitar, a microphone and nothing else.
