Playing nine shows (yes, nine) over the course of four days, Austin's own Uncle Lucius - a slow and low mixture of soul, bluegrass and rock 'n roll - is a group of guys out to make a point. Recently they revealed that point, along with some of their inspirations and influences, while riding in a tour van through the state of New York. Uncle Lucius has adopted the Southern Rock genre, but not just its music. The members of the band seem to have adopted its spirituality as well (and for those of you who are not familiar with the aforementioned style of music, just think of how convinced those guys sound when they sing "Sweet Home Alabama"). But jokes aside, they reveal just how spiritually motivated they indeed are. As Uncle Lucius approaches half a decade of co-existing, they are ripping through the northeast on their way back home for their upcoming SXSW 2010 shows. How was your band formed?
The gods got together and shaped us in the image of themselves in order to save this world from ego-driven mediocrity.
Who are some of your influences?
The Band, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Otis Redding and, of course, Bill Hicks.
How did you get the name Uncle Lucius?
Actually a spiritual entity that revealed itself to us in a simultaneous dream in early 2005. He charged us with teaching the world the meaning of In La'Kesh.
