Surfer Blood Praise Florida Tacos at SXSW

When you come to the land of tacos that is Austin, you'd think it'd be a bit brash to speak of your allegiances to tacos from other towns -- but that's what dirge-rock band Surfer Blood did at the SXSW Insound Party. "This place is near and dear to my heart," lead vocalist/guitarist J.P. Pitts told the crowd. "It's called Rocco's Tacos and it's in West Palm Beach." No one seem to haze him for speaking of another town's love, but it didn't matter, because they launched into 'Take It Easy,' one of the poppier tunes from the band's debut 'Astro Coast.' Although their set was only 25 minutes, they managed to squeeze in all the goodies off the record such as 'Swim' and 'Harmonix,' but continued to pay homage to their home state of Florida by discussing smells of suntan lotion before launching into 'Twin Peaks,' a song that references the cold winters of upstate New York. Clearly, minds were wandering.
Surfer Blood is currently enjoying a wave of critical praise and it doesn't seem like they're having any trouble adjusting to the rough and tough schedules of the road. They recently debuted new material in Chicago and recorded a set for Spinner's Interface, where they told us about how most of the groundwork was laid in dorm rooms. So for a band that was barely in existence this time last year, we can give them a pass on the whole taco situation. Or just note that West Palm Beach also has a taco game going.
Surfer Blood will be on tour in the United States through the end of April before heading over to Europe for most of May.
