Andrew W.K. Overcomes Tough Times at SXSW
- Posted on Mar 23rd 2010 11:33AM by Dean Carrell
Andrew W.K. faced tough times during SXSW. At two separate shows, one stage broke, and a crowd almost crunched his equipment. Later, he showed up in short sleeves to perform head-on into a freezing wind.At least that show had a moat of bouncers. Hours earlier, at a 4AM show, the surging crowd of drunk college students drunks constantly threatened to
overwhelm the thin barrier of nervous students protecting the foot-tall, cramped stage at a run-down housing co-op.
Even before SXSW ended, Andrew W.K. headed for Monterrey, Mexico, to play Todd P's MtyMX Festival, where bands and fans faced a tough time crossing the border.
All his real-life close-calls ironically emulate the title of his new album, 'Close Calls With Brick Walls,'' that appears March 23 in the U.S.

Dean, use your own AOL account to post your own opinions about such weighty matters. Personally, I think "rundown" is fine. I'm surprised the co-op hasn't been run down by bulldozers clearing the land for condos. It will take bulldozers to do it. With that big crowd shaking the 2nd-story floor at Andrew W.K.'s show, the place is still standing so it must be sturdy. -- Steve C.

(There was a lot more around before the condo onslaught.) I just couldn't associate a word so slow and elderly with all the young, manic energy pulsing in the buildings that night. -- Dean Carrell
