One-Eyed Doll Hair Whips Crowd Into a Frenzy of Fun at SXSW

One-Eyed Doll have won several Austin Music Awards for best punk or metal band. Too bad there's no category for hair whipping. Vocalist Kimberley Freeman can sling her 36-inch mane within two inches of any target. She ended Sunday's SXSW show with a running dive headlong into the drummer's chest.

Unlike most grunge-metal artisans, Freeman is persistently perky onstage. Judging from her effective fan-based marketing, she's perky offstage, too.

The band's show last Sunday, the last night of SXSW week, is one small example why most people stagger out of Austin too soon. One-Eyed Doll's was among many shows all over Austin, but the epicenter of Sunday night fun is the large line-up at three close-by clubs, Headhunters, Beerland and Emo's. It's worth staying Sunday just for the novelty of walking into Emo's without waiting in a block-long line.
