With their second album, 'Congratulations', now available for streaming ahead of its April release, Brooklyn psyche-pop duo MGMT have revealed how they came to work with producer and erstwhile Spacemen 3 member Sonic Boom."We were in London for the NME Awards," founder Ben Goldwasser told Spinner, "and we had just started working on the album. Andrew [VanWyngarden] and I were over here hanging out with the Television Personalities guys and a friend of theirs who knew Sonic Boom told him about the show. It turned out that Sonic Boom had heard of us and he invited us to go on stage with him and play at this show."
He continued, "We didn't think that we'd figure on his map at all or that he would care about a band like us because we didn't think that he'd care about pop music. But we started writing back and forth after that and sending him stuff that we were working on and he was giving us suggestions or telling us about music that it reminded him of and then we invited him to come over and work on the album with us."
Speaking to the Quietus, Goldwasser also explained why -- after days of online rumours -- MGMT failed to show up at Sonic Boom's Spectrum gig in London last Wednesday (March 17).
He said: "We were too busy to go to the show. We had a really long day in Maida Vale doing a session and we did about five songs. Then we went to the rehearsal studio for a little photo shoot and a rehearsal."
