Phil Collins Hopes to Play With Genesis Again
- Posted on Mar 26th 2010 11:30AM by Emily Tan
As previously reported, Genesis drummer/frontman Phil Collins has severe nerve damage after a neck operation last year, making it very hard for him to use his hands or even hold drum sticks. "The first time I picked up the drum sticks after my neck surgery, they flew across the room because I couldn't grip them," Collins told Rolling Stone. "When I play, I've had to tape the sticks to my hand. It's like wearing a condom. It's very strange. It really cramps my style."
Not only has it affected his drumming but also his daily life, Collins revealed that he "can't let go of the spoon or the knife when I eat" or "open a car door."
Despite his disability, Collins is hopeful to perform again in a Genesis reunion. "My hands are down to picking the order of that possibility," he said. "Three years ago I didn't know I'd be in this position and three years from now it may not be like this. I think the main thing is [Peter Gabriel's] schedule and the speed he works anyway."
Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks does worry that the reunion may not happen because of Collins' medical issues. However he does think that there are ways to work around it with the use of technology. "I think if we were to do 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,' there's always multimedia stuff that makes it possible now," Banks said. "It would be opening a huge can of worms, not just musical but getting out and playing it."

I'm a HUGE Genesis fan but I've never seen them live and I'd like to do this ONE THING before I (or any of them) die!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE guys, I don't care if the tickets cost £10K and you have the gig on Mars, I'll BE THERE!!
Phil, I sure do hope you get better. I have nerve damage also; degenerative disc disease, and mine is not going to get better. I am also a lontime Genesis fan, from the early days. I saw them perform "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium. But if you'll just sing, let Chester do the drumming, and come to Atlanta, we will come to see you. Genesis skipped the south on the last tour, and we were really disappointed.

April 29 2010 at 4:28 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI find it unfortunate that Peter appears to suggest that if they do ever get the 1975 band back together that they would do 90 minutes of 'TLLDOBroadway'? Yuck! Watcher, Hogweed, Knife, Firth, Supper... Can-Utility!
April 24 2010 at 4:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replysorry about the injury Phil, WE WANT PETER on vocals, but since you cant be the drummer right now, you could do vocals WITH Pete and Chester could be on drums, and thus, making the earlier and later fans of Genesis happy. It would be nice if finally you guys did SOMETHING the fans wanted, how long do we have to beg for this reunion?

GENESIS is fine and will record again & tour....the reason is simple!
$Money$ They are (worth) in demand now more than ever, they'll also be paid in excess over $75-$100 million just to tour and not to mention a new CD (Not Album) gone PLATINUM!
They're very patient and are keen to just the exact moment in time to announce a worldwide tour partially limited in dates but lucrative...with subsequent tours in the coming years....My friends GENESIS is truly a new beginning or era
Peter is a great singer and songwriter and Phil is great drummer. But Phil is a great vocalist and songwriter too! If he cant play drums, then sing! Keep Singing!
I think that there's only one who can replace Phil on drums, Chester Thompson. He's been on Genesis since 70's and he's part of Genesis too. He culd play drums an Phil just singin.

Not a day goes by that I don't wish for a reunion of the immortal 70-74 lineup; the ultimate incarnation of the greatest band ever to grace the face of the earth.
The only way that it can happen now is that you get well soon!
And of course, THE BOSS (I think you Genesis fans know who I'm talking about)who we all love should learn to be less stuborn and if Phil recovers I hope he'll finally do his part to at least have Genesis go out with a "BANG-BANG-BANG."
