Diane Birch Reveals the Secrets Behind Her 'Valentino' Video

For a clue as to how Diane Birch's amazing video for her bouncy pop song, 'Valentino,' was made, check out the video below. The clip shows Birch being directed and the setup behind the scenes, but still leaves viewers scratching their heads as to how exactly it was done, especially as the finished video is a one-take cut without any slice and dice trickery in the edit. "When I saw the behind the scenes clip, I thought, 'This all looks so easy. They won't even realize how much work I put into this,'" Birch tells Spinner, speaking from her home in Brooklyn. "If you're still confused, that's a good sign."
Director Dennis Liu came up with the tech-savvy concept, which features Birch skipping along, swapping out cute outfits and objects to the breezy, sweet pop song from her latest album, 'Bible Belt.' But there was much more to making it than dancing around and looking pretty. "It was one of those things where I kept telling myself, 'Pretend that you're having fun. Remember, this is supposed to be fun. Don't let people know it's the 15th hour you've been doing the same thing and it's the 57th take,'" the 27-year-old singer/pianist says with a giggle.
Oddly, Birch, who moves with the grace of a young colt in the video, says she is not a natural dancer. "It was definitely challenging," she admits. "I'm used to sitting behind a piano. I'm not really a dancer unless I'm dancing to hip-hop somewhere in a basement. For me to do these choreographed routines and all that, it's completely out of form for me. I developed a greater appreciation for people who dance and sing at the same time. It is really difficult."
