Slash Responds to Axl Rose Calling Him a 'Cancer'
- Posted on Apr 6th 2010 1:00PM by Jonathan Dekel
It's no secret that Axl Rose is not the biggest fan of his former Guns 'N Roses bandmate Slash. Though the two haven't spoken face to face since Slash's departure from the legendary group back in 1996, both have spent the ensuing time using the media to discuss each others' exploits.
While neither has been complimentary, it was Rose who took the feud to a whole new level when, in an interview with long-time friend and former road manager Del James, first published on Spinner, he called his band's former guitarist a "cancer."
"There's zero possibility of me having anything to do with Slash other than by ambush, and that wouldn't be pretty," Rose told James. "There is the distinct possibility that having his intentions in regard to me so deeply ingrained and his personal, though guarded, distaste for much of 'Appetite [For Destruction,' the band's Diamond-certified debut album] ' other than his or Duff's playing, Slash either should not have been in Guns to begin with or should have left after 'Lies.' In a nutshell, personally I consider him a cancer and better removed, avoided -- and the less anyone heard of him or his supporters, the better."
At the time, Slash simply shrugged off the accusation, telling the Las Vegas Review-Journal that it didn't really affect him. Now, for the first time, the guitarist reveals his true feelings on the matter and the man with whom he co-wrote some of rock's biggest hits.
"For one, I've never said anything derogatory about anyone's performance on 'Appetite,'" Slash tells Spinner. "So right from the start it's just off."
Furthermore the guitarist, who lost his mother to lung cancer last June, reveals that though he agrees with the sentiment behind some of Rose's comments, the singer's choice of wording was tough to take.
"The cancer thing, I'll go with him on that, that fits into his description of things. I wouldn't use the word 'cancer' but I haven't gone anywhere and I don't seem to be going anywhere so that's justified," Slash says, before pausing to reflect. "Actually, I lost my mom to cancer so that was a little bit of hard rhetoric at that particular time, but it's typical Axl stuff... I know how he comes off and how he really is, so I give him credit where hopefully it's due."
Slash's self-titled solo debut album is out April 6 and you can hear it right now on Spinner's CD Listening Party.

"Slash shouldnt've been in the band in the first place"...amazing. :-/
Well Axel, it seems you are content having bottles thrown at you at every show you do, while Slash while Slash will enjoy a fruitful life and career. I would consider an apology or keep bringing out the "umberellas".

It is GNR I care about and they are keeping it away from us. I wish they would just get over their own personal BS and get back to re-inspiring us.
Slash churned out some of the most amazing solos in Appetite & Illusions. Izzy was more likely responsible for the grinding riffs. Al said and done though, Slash can't write a tune to save himself. No dispute about that. His new record is sadly more washed out blues plugged in over completely forgettable songs. Chinese Demo although v. dark, was GNR the way people want to hear it. Also Slash turning up to play Nov. Rain etc. with rappers is a joke.
Regardless of who is doing good now or then. Say what you want to about Axle or Slash, neither one of them would be where they are today without the voice and the music backing the voice! So most likely if it wasn't for them doing AFD they might still be nobodies!!!!!

But while it is true that Slash talks more about the situation than Axl it's only because he doesn't mind talking about it. Axl treats it like Slash is a plague because look at the facts. You were in one of the best bands of it's time and after the split your former band members make their own band. If your a sensitive person like Axl you consider that like a kick in the nuts. Also you can imagine how much drugs they did back in the day. All you need is to be depressed and get high. Then you start thinking about everything. Same thing with drinking. Once you ponder over everything you've been through you start wondering "Where'd it go wrong? Why are they still loved but I'm just left to rot? Why does everyone love Slash when I'm what made GNR? I bet he was just trying to steal all the fame for himself. He was my best friend in the whole group and even he betrayed me. Fuck it. Fuck everyone and Fuck slash."
I could deffinately imagine that being easily offended and having a huge ego would play a big role in it. You can look at some of his onstage antics and see that. Repeatedly stopping shows to lash out at fans because he notices something that pisses him off and instead of shrugging it off and keep going he has to voice his opinion. So he tells the whole band to stop playing so he can show of his "don't give a fuck" attitude. I believe Slash when he says that he doesn't have hard feelings because in most of his interviews he's always very positive reflecting on Axl.
So finally I really believe that it's a personality trait of Axl. He feels betrayed and the only finger he can point to is the one who is still going on with his life. But because of how he is he will never forgive Slash for the break up that Axl himself caused. If he could just not take shit personally they would have a chance for reunion. Sometimes it's good to bury the hatchet.
Hmmmmm, I see or hear Slash's name everywhere at different music events or he shows up to play a lead for someone on an award show. After GNR he regrouped and Velvet Revolver was a great band too but yet feel victim to another spoiled drama queen with Scott Weiland because of his constant battle with addictions. I never ever see Rose anywhere, which is good because he looks very rough, time has not been good to him. Rose is a drama queen who lashes out like a small child whenever he does not get his way and in turn he has ended up alienating everyone around him who made him successful. After GNR Rose hasn't done sh** and it took like 7 yrs or something ridiculous for his new CD to come out and it got zero air time. Rose is hype! Back in the day he could blend with the group GNR and they all shined but without the band mates he used to have he is nothing and he knows it. SLASH is a guitarist who has stamped his sound in rock music history. You can tell who is playing a lead in a song when he is playing that Les Paul and making it cry! SLASH continues on down the road of making great sounding quality music with whoever and where ever, which is clearly evident on his new compilation. ROse could never do something like that because of his temper tantrums and his role of being the drama queen! RIP Rose you are just a washed up ex-frontman of a once great band! Realize your current role of being a bitter old dude who cannot realize that you are old news and nobody cares!

We only have Slash's side of the story because frankly he never stops talking. Axl is one of the greatest frontmen in rock history, as well as an awesome songwriter...

So when Slash formed a new band with the other GNR members, Axl felt betrayed by his best friend and favorite collegue and he couldn't accept it. Probably, Axl blamed Slash for everything that went wrong in Guns. Slash has a rather easy going personality so he couldnt take it anymore and he got tired of handling the situation and calming Axl down. This is why Axl is using sarcasm and pun to get back to him. Axl must have really liked and admired Slash so all these feelings turned into hatred and accusation. Very immature but clear as a spring water. Probably, Axl is really missing Slash deep down inside.( I just remembered how he introduced him admirably "half man half beast"...)
Its a pity.. really... Your energies mixed great on stage.. Axl was like the sun; energetic, fiery and crazy and Slash was like the moon; enigmatic, charismatic.. you guys were epic together and u completed eachother.. Life is short, Axl.. too short to let your best buddies go.
Axl has a choice of what he wants to do and what he doesn't. And if he doesn't want the old GNR or doesn't like Slash, that's his business not ours. Just leave him alone and let him rock the way he wants to.
