LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy Takes Aim at Simon Cowell
- Posted on Apr 7th 2010 10:30AM by Julian Marszalek
Just before he bows out with what he claims will be his last album, 'This Is Happening', LCD Soundsystem's head honcho James Murphy has paused to take a swipe at TV singing contests such as 'The X Factor' and 'American Idol' and their svengali-like figure, Simon Cowell.The production guru says the shows sadden him because of the values that they represent.
Speaking to NME, Murphy said, "I'm not really angry or against them [reality TV contests], it just feels like the same s--- as most other pop music. "
He continued, "I don't know what the big harm is. In one way it's grotesquely honest, which makes me sad we're so numb that we're OK with it -- with Simon [Cowell] being a piece of s--- and 'This is how the business is.' That makes me sad that people accept it."
'This Is Happening' drops on May 17 and LCD Soundsystem will tour extensively between April and September when they trek across North America and Europe for what looks like their last ever tour.

I quite agree with the comments. This is about Karioke, not music. Look up the difference. Audiences seem to want to hear what they already know. Where is the forum for something new? What ever happened to ART?

Thanks to Simon who cares how much money he makes. Consider the alternative a whole group of talented artists not getting discovered. I guess you know what that means.

THIS IS A CONTEST, PEOPLE HAVE TO BE ELIMINATED,OR IT WILL BE A NEVERENDING SHOW....HEAVEN HELP US!! FOR MY PART, I ENJOY HEARING EVERYTHING THE JUDGES HAVE TO SAY, EXCEPT FOR ELLEN...I LIKE HER SHOW, BUT SHE DOES NOT BELONG ON A SINGING TALENT SHOW...SHE'S A COMEDIAN AND SHOULD HAVE LEFT IT THAT WAY....ACTUALLY, I AM GETTING TIRED OF SEEING HER...ALMOST TO THE POINT THAT I AM NOT SURE I LIKE HER SHOW ANYMORE

Simon=wellknown, accomplished and RICH!
This fool= unknown, irrelevant and just plain LAME
i can kinda see what he's saying. the music industry has changed quite a bit. while some people works their asses off to make it in the industry, others just try out for a show. but calling simon cowell a piece of s--- is taking it too far. he took part in the making of one of the biggest and most successful shows ever.

April 08 2010 at 7:48 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have no idea who this man is or his group, so no great loss to me that it's his last album. I do agree that all of these music-related reality shows are just crap. As a vocal coach and music teacher, I find that only a small fraction of the criticism is insightful. The rest is just for ratings. Cara is just confusing so many people... do you want these contestants to relegate themselves to only a small demographic or genre, or do you want to encourage them to reach beyond their comfort zones and try all of the themes you're giving them each week? When she unloaded on Tim Urban about touching the girls' hands in the audience or sliding around the stage she said he hadn't earned that right yet... but what is this, the "I haven't taken my licks Idol", or the "I'm fighting for a record contract and I'll do what my fans like and not interest myself in what the judges say Idol"? Seriously... Were it me up there... I'd tell the judges where they can stick there overly critical crap and say that I'm singing for my fans, not your tastes. It's commercialized and it degrades what I call real music making for the sake of competition and ratings. Crystal is perhaps the only one who isn't buying in to the whole thing. She comes out nigth after night, as herself, unapologetically... and the judges LOVE her. What gives? There's no consistency from the judges. They play favorites and the rest are pawns. Simon's antics are probably scripted and overly mean. You can give constructive crticism without destroying a person in the process.
