Technically it is illegal to drink alcohol in public in Mexico, although many people do so in tourist areas. In a later Twitter missive, Kapranos inferred a little light bribery may have been involved in the "all fine" coda to the incident.
"My American friend Grant sorted it," he wrote. "My friend Grant, for those who haven't met him -- Mexican cops seem to hold him in high regard." This appears to be a reference to Ulysses S. Grant, who led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War, and who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Grant's face appears on the US $50 bill.
