MGMT Showcase 'Congratulations' in San Francisco

On Monday night, MGMT kicked off their much anticipated North American tour with the first part of a two-night stand at the historic Fillmore in San Francisco, Calif. On the eve of the release of their sophomore album, 'Congratulations,' the band used their grand opening night to debut and showcase their new material, kicking off the festivities with the folky 'I Found a Whistle' before going into sonic overdrive with 'Brian Eno.'Oh, don't worry, they still performed a healthy selection from everybody's favorite album of yesteryear, 'Oracular Spectacular,' too. They even brought out songs from what would've been that album's Side B -- such as 'Pieces of What' -- alongside its obvious hits ('Electric Feel,' 'Time to Pretend').
And although they kept banter to a minimum, frontman Andrew Wyngarden did introduce their new sprawling 12-minute centerpiece 'Siberian Breaks' by saying not only that the song was admittedly "pretty long" but, more to the point, "This is a song we used to smoke weed to." Yeah -- no duh.
MGMT will perform once more in San Francisco on Tuesday night before taking 'Congratulations' to the masses this Friday at Coachella.
