Sonic Youth and Wilco Members Cover Burt Bacharach on New Record

Having been rediscovered by Elvis Costello, Noel Gallagher and Dr Dre in recent years, Burt Bacharach -- the '60s king of easy-listening pop -- is now the inspiration for a tribute album put together by post-rock pioneer and producer Jim O'Rourke. Titled 'All Kinds of People -- Love Burt Bacharach,' the album has so far been released only in Japan, where O'Rourke currently lives, Pitchfork has reported. The album features O'Rourke, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore (pictured) and Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche alongside Japanese musicians including Haruomi Hosono of the Yellow Magic Orchestra. Songs covered include 'Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,' 'Do You Know the Way to San Jose,' 'Walk On By' and 'Close to You.'
There are currently no plans to release the album outside of Japan, but Thurston Moore's wonderful take on the classic '(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me' -- a No. 1 hit hit for Sandie Shaw in 1964 -- is available on YouTube.
The song is one of the most-covered Bacharach tracks, with everyone from the Housemartins to synth-pop duo Naked Eyes releasing versions.
The most startling thing about the Sonic Youth man's take is how faithful it is to the original -- scratchy feedback at the start and end aside, we could be in a Holiday Inn lounge enjoying some gentle mood music along with our martinis.
