Passion Pit were not the only band that kept remarking about what an incredible lineup Coachella has this year, professing their love for the audience and how psyched they were to play here. But perhaps they have more of a reason than some of the others for their total awe. As band leader Michael Angelakos said, "We released an album in May of 2009 and here we are playing for all of you. Thank you for supporting us and giving us the time of day." He then launched into 'Moth Wings.' Tens of thousands in the audience knew every note. Few were as surprised as Angelakos.
In the beginning of the set, Angelakos was obviously overwhelmed. But by the end, he transformed into nothing less than a rock star as he commanded -- not begged -- the audience to get "rowdy" and loud during 'Sleepyhead.' Naturally, they obliged.
"We've been looking forward to this festival since we were told there was even a chance that it'd happen," he said, giving shoutouts to Jay-Z, Vampire Weekend and LCD Soundsystem. Like Passion Pit, those acts all played on Friday. Coachella continues on Saturday with much-anticipated sets by MGMT, Muse, Hot Chip, Faith No More and many more.
