"Thanks for letting us play," said frontman Andrew Van Wyngarden, greeting a sea of people as the band opened with their new single, 'Flash Delirium.' And, sure enough, MGMT's short set did make a case for their brand new disc, 'Congratulations,' which was just released last week. "Please go buy our album," pleaded Wyngarden, making no bones about it.
Meanwhile the audience, of course, remained most enthusiastic about MGMT's "old" material from 2008's 'Oracular Spectacular,' responding to those songs as if they were hearing breakouts of classic hits. And, in a way, they were.
When Wyngarden jokingly asked, "Who's on drugs here?" a wild cheer erupted -- but it was probably because the band had started to launch into 'Fated to Pretend.' Tens of thousands sang along to its household lyrics, including the line "I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin and f--- with the stars." Simultaneously, with no pun intended, Paris Hilton watched from the sidelines. Pink, Beck and Tommy Lee were also spectators. Among, of course.... many.
