Volcano Causes LCD Soundsystem, Gil Scott-Heron and More to Cancel Gigs

While Iceland coughs volcanic ash all over the UK and Europe, and eco-warriors celebrate the lack of planes in the sky, there's one major downside to having that nice hazy sunset. The usual flights your favourite bands take to skip across oceans are getting cancelled, and that means scrapped tour dates.Of note, LCD Soundsystem have cancelled their Tuesday, April 20, Dublin show with Yacht, according to the Yacht Twitter and State website, with dates to be rescheduled. We hope the smoke clears for their two nights in London on April 23 and 24, at the O2 Brixton Academy.
XL Recordings have just made announcements regarding Gil Scott-Heron's and Karen Elson's gigs. Scott-Heron was due to perform Tuesday, April 20, at London's Royal Festival Hall, which is refunding tickets. Karen's gig at London's Slaughtered Lamb pub on Monday, April 19, is postponed.
Nico Muhly, who recently collaborated with Sigur Rós frontman Jonsi on his solo album, has cancelled his performance at Dublin's National Concert Hall with Ben Frost and Sam Amidon. Their London show has already been rescheduled to April 27.
With some of our biggest artists over at Coachella, including Thom Yorke, Muse, Gorillaz, Florence and the Machine, the Specials and La Roux, there could be more disappointment for UK fans. Without a clear word from meteorologists on how long the ash will be around, no one can say how long flights will be grounded.
We'll let you know if more gigs are cancelled, and if you hear of anything first, do let us know.

"Brad", it takes all sorts to make the world go round. I like music , films and entertainment that some younger people might not like, it does not make my choice anymore or less important. I can still hear my parents talking about the "Rock and Roll" not being anything but lousy music. They were wrong and so are you. Just because they or you do not like the music of today does not make it less meaningful to the young people who listen and enjoy. My radio comes with an on and off switch and even a dial to change the channel....try it sometime and lose the stress. When will the government put regulations on Mother Earth to prevent her from adding to "Global Warming" , she is the worst polluter of warming gasses (Volcano). It may be her way of cleaning herself up!

Of course we are all biased in our opinions of what is considered good music. There is a biological factor that makes us like the music we listened to as teens for our entire lives.
As for the Mother Nature comment. As a Geologist, I can tell you that is completely untrue. Of course this volcano is spewing gases and pollutants into the atmosphere. Still it is nowhere near that of human activities, which release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes. That would be like adding 8,000 volcanoes the size of Kilauea to the planet every year. Overall the effects of volcanic eruptions cause Global COOLING not WARMING.
As for those commenting how this is not news. I suppose if you had tickets for one of these concerts, you'd feel otherwise. This is a music site. The concert at Coachella is a big deal here. I'm sure the reporting of the cancellation of certain acts due to the volcano was news to those attending that concert.
I'd swim to see Gil Scott

Nowadays you cannot sing if you want to be a singer, you cannot be a true musician if you want to play. We have settled for mediocrity in entertainment, music, film, and in just about all aspects of life today.
April 19 2010 at 12:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySomeone needs to get their facts straight Gil Scott-Heron's gig on 20 April is NOT cancelled, only tonight's "In Conversation" is.
April 19 2010 at 12:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFor all the folks claiming to have never heard of these artists; STAY IGNORANT and you will never know what you've missed. Gil Scott Heron is considered on of the leading musicians in the world. He is also thought to have been perhaps the single, most influential performer who paved the way for black rap. Geez, I'm a whitey, and even I know that !
April 19 2010 at 12:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWith all due respect Rebecca, this is a music site so I'm guessing that the music fans who have tickets for these shows care about missing the gigs.
April 19 2010 at 12:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWOW!!!!! WHAT A SHAME, WHAT A LOSS, THOSE CONCERTS ALL HAD TO BE CANCELLED???? BIG FN DEAL!!!!! AIN'T NEVER HEARD OF ANY OF THEM ANYWAY. WHO CARES?
April 19 2010 at 10:43 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnd we have never heard of you Butcherman74 so frankly your opinion is without merit. By the way, there is no need to yell and if it upsets you that much then use a little common sense and don't read about it. Sorry, I mistakenly assumed you has some common sense. My mistake.
April 19 2010 at 10:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAh yes....this is major news for the folks at Spinner. The Iceland volcano has caused concerts all over Europe to be cancelled, preventing Europeans from seeing bands most Americans have never heard of anyway. Just more proof that Spinner is no longer relevant. Ya hear that AOL?
