The Black Crowes 'Say Goodnight' and Wave Goodbye

For the second time in their career, the Black Crowes appear to be throwing in the towel. Except that they don't want to call it like that, per-se, so they're simply telling fans that they're going on an "indefinite hiatus." But first the band plans a long farewell. They'll kick off the super-extensive "Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys" tour in August before taking their final bows -- for now, anyway -- in December at the conclusion of a six-night stand in San Francisco. The advertising for the tour promises two-set, three-hour shows, billed as "Acoustic Hors D'oeuvres followed by an Electric Reception with the Black Crowes."This year marks 20 years since the Black Crowes first broke onto the scene with their debut album, 'Shake Your Money Maker.' It reached multi-platinum sales during a time when albums could still do that and it was more than just a big money maker for the band -- it was a career maker. As a way of commemorating and celebrating that career, the band plans a double album featuring new, all acoustic versions of 20 songs from their catalog. 'Croweology' will be sold for the price of a single album and released on August 3.
"With a smile so wide you can count my teeth, and with a heart so full of love that it is spilling over the rim, I offer a humble and simple thank you," said band leader Chris Robinson in a statement to the press. "Thank you for your time, your imaginations, your heartaches and joy. Thank you for 20 years of cosmic rock 'n' roll. 20 years of keeping it weird. 20 years of chasing horizons ... this year the music is only for you as we celebrate what has been, what is now and whatever will be."
That certainly sounds like a goodbye, to us.

Saw the Black Crowes in concert some years ago -- they put on a hell of a show. A good band in their heyday.

Then in an interview Chris said that he and the band hated doing that first album, but there "people" told them you have to do something "catchy" to draw everyone in and then you will be able to do what you guys realy want to do. Chris said it was great that he the right people guiding them.
I felt a bit let down to know they call that there "fake" album but I did go on to like a few of there songs over the 20 years.
Good guy's and a good band. Thanks for the memories and best of luck.
It was a long time ago when I heard SYMM, I was 27. It sounded familiarily great. As a bit of a guitarist, I tried to pick out a couple of songs and this was met with difficulty. Later, I read in a guitar mag why. These guys wrote this album using open tunings and really came up with something good. The upside to this was obvious, success, the downside was that it was a rip off of "Exile on Main St" from 72. I would further say that this idea from 72 was not original to Keith Richards. Like Keith Richards said during a trial while being sued for ripping off (now called sampling?)was "There are only so many grooves in rock and roll". From a big fan of both bands in OKC!

Each band or artist has their own style & appeal, if you've never listened to them then you have no right to run them down, and it only shows what a narrow mind you possess.
I for one, detest rap music, or as I refer to it by it's acronym (Retards Attempting Poetry) & I've listened to a great deal of it seeing as I work as a recording engineer for a major recording studio, but even though I may not like the style of music that they're trying to create, I still give them my utmost respect & do the very best job I can to make them sound the way they want you to hear them.
I also don't pigeonhole myself into thinking that what genres of music that I prefer are the only ones that matter; in fact, my tastes in music cover a very broad spectrum, and having worked for over 2/3 of my 53+ years in the music industry as a session musician & recording engineer has allowed me to develop a unique perspective through all the years that I've sat on the other side of the window watching people work their asses off through 19 hour days of endless takes, retakes, lyric, chord & tempo changes & then working even longer blending the best parts of all of those takes to create a performance that they can be proud of, and to release a track or hopefully an entire album that will please the folks that enjoy whatever style of music that particular group or artist performs.
So when you sit there at your computer & run down someone who quite obviously has more talent & courage than you, then you only show how small minded & gutless you are. For if you could really do better than the artists that you despise because they don't play the brand of music you like then you'd be out there taking the chances they do every time they step in front of a microphone, because even if they fail, they at least know in their minds & hearts that they were willing to take the risk & possibly attain a degree of satisfaction, pleasure & success that you in your cynical little XBox bubble will never know.
And I'll sum their difference between their lives & yours up with a quote by a very great man who never recorded a song in his life, yet he understood what it is to try.
âExcellence is reserved for those who, even when they fail, do so by doing greatly, so that their place shall never be among those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.â
shouldn't they have done this 19 years ago?
