Devo Do 'What They Do' at Coachella
- Posted on Apr 20th 2010 4:08AM by Benjy Eisen
While Tiesto closed out the main stage at Coachella on Saturday, playing to a field filled with nearly as many glowsticks and pacifiers as people, Devo offered an alternative dance party for a different generation in the Mojave tent. At least on paper. In truth, most of the fans and curiosity-seekers present had missed Devo the first time around (a.k.a. the '70s) and were here to see their comeback...even though the band has actually been active again for a few years now. There's no denying that the pace has certainly picked up recently though, in conjunction with a high profile appearance at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The band also has new material -- finally -- as well as new hats and outfits. As for their iconic Energy Dome hats, blue is the new red. Almost surprisingly, Devo were not bashful about performing the new material, including the Spinner-premiered 'What We Do,' live for an audience that probably just strolled inside the tent in the hopes of hearing 'Whip It.'
Funny thing about that -- announcing it as "Here's one you might remember," as soon as they finished it, the crowd instantly thinned. Devo has been doing unabashed market research for their upcoming studio release, even asking fans to vote on which songs should make the final cut. Perhaps Devo should open source their setlists too -- had people known that shortly after 'Whip It,' they would also tackle their infamous covers of 'Secret Agent Man' and, of course, the Rolling Stones' '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction,' the crowd just might have stuck around. As for the band, well, new colors, new outfits and new songs have given them new life but it's not really a makeover per-se: Devo are still not men. Devo are still Devo.

Nothing is "fresh" about their new songs. They are still devo trying to make a another one hit wonder "whip it". The crowd was lifeless at their cocahella show. Only song was whip it that people shows some enthusiam. Alot of people left. The hot girl next to me said "gosh, these guys look and sound ridiclious for their age". I totally agreed. Instead of being legends, now they will be know as has beens. Should have quit while they were ahead.
