This isn't exactly a new phenomenon, but the sheer number of cool things to get lost in online has been steadily and dramatically increasing. As it has for the past 14 years, the Webby Awards aim to spotlight the very best of the best, and Spinner.com's AOL mothership is playing host to Webbys voting.
With categories all over the map, literally and figuratively, there are a few music-related categories of particular interest. The 'Celebrity/Fan' category, for example, has U2 competing with DJ Shadow, while the 'Music (Online Film & Video)' category has Daryl Hall's web series 'Live From Daryl's House' going up against $99 Music Videos and the aforementioned Muppets video.
In the simple, straight-up category of 'Music,' music mainstay Pitchfork is pitted against Pandora, NPR Music, "paint a song" site Labuat and the experimental YouTube Symphony Orchestra.
Voting is currently underway and, in the open-sourced spirit of cyberspace, you can make your opinion count in the People's Voice Award. Go there now and rock the vote. Then feel free to go back to procrastinating on Chatroulette, or whatever.
