He may not be the best candidate to spur on the England football team in South Africa this summer, but the Fall's frontman Mark E Smith is set to release an unofficial World Cup anthem. The singer, known equally for his outspoken nature as well as his role in the Manchester post-punk band, is teaming up with former Fall guitarist Ed Blaney and Jenny Shuttleworth, who records under the name Girl Peculiar, to release 'England's Heartbeat,' reports NME.com.
The track, to be released under the moniker Shuttleworth, will be available to purchase as a digital single on May 4 and physically on June 7.
It seems like the track might not be as cheerful and supportive as previous World Cup singles, with lyrics like 'This is not 1974, this is not 1976, you are not at Stamford Bridge, but you are on a Boer Ridge' and 'socks up at last or be a Brazilian breakfast' set to feature on the track.
Previous World Cup songs for the England team have included the seminal 1996 Baddiel and Skinner/Lightning Seeds song 'Three Lions,' New Order's 1990 fan favourite 'World in Motion' and the oft-forgotten 1998 classic, Fat Les' 'Vindaloo'
This year's FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11 and takes place in cities across South Africa. The tournament's official anthem is Shakira's 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),' which she's set to perform at the opening ceremony in Johannesburg on June 10.
