With an almost cruel sense of timing, bassist Carlos D -- that'll be Carlos Dengler to his mum -- has quit Interpol after 13 years with the band. The news comes after New York's melancholic rockers gave fans a teaser of their upcoming new album last week in the form of a free download, 'Lights.'A statement on the band's website reads, "After the completion of the album, Carlos informed the rest of us that he would be leaving the band. He has decided to follow another path, and to pursue new goals."
The band, set to tour with U2 this summer, insists the parting of the ways is far from acrimonious, saying, "This separation is amicable, and we wholeheartedly wish him great happiness and success. We will remain, as always, deeply respectful fans of this blazingly talented individual."
The band told fans to expect some interesting developments. "We can tell you that we have some very exciting new recruits joining us on the road. So stay tuned -- we will promptly be revealing the identities of these illustrious players."
Quite who these are likely to be are, of course, open to speculation but high on the fantasy wish-list must surely be one-time Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook whose indelible and inspirational bass lines are daubed all over Interpol's works. Spinner can only dream.
