Beach House Angered by Katy Perry's New Album Title
- Posted on May 11th 2010 1:40PM by Carter Maness
Beach House captured nostalgic hearts and minds earlier this year with the release of their third full-length LP, 'Teen Dream.' The record fed on memories of early love, dreamy melodies and the powerful texture of Victoria Legrand's voice to expand the group's fan base and earn plenty of critical accolades. Apparently, Katy Perry is looking to do the same thing on her upcoming record, which she's calling 'Teenage Dream.' Looks like it's time for controversy! Beach House found out about the upcoming 'Teenage Dream' on Monday night and took to Twitter to break the news to their followers. The band seemed pretty disgusted by the whole ordeal. "Can't believe this," they wrote, providing a link to the Perry album's Wikipedia page. "And not in a good way, guess we have to write a song called 'i kiss a girl.'"
While a Beach House pop song about sexual experimentation could be fun, it appears the duo's fans viewed this as a call to arms. Naturally, they hopped on the album's Wiki page to set the record straight.
"Mrs. Perry's album title may or may not be ripping off the brilliant indie duo Beach House and their critically acclaimed record 'Teen Dream.' It will be a challenge for her to achieve the same aural masterpiece," wrote one disgruntled. Sadly, the comments have since been deleted.
Perry's record is currently set for an Aug. 24 release.

Well, itâs amazing. The miracle has been done. Well done.
Hatâs off. Well done, as we know that âhard work always pays offâ, after a long struggle with sincere effort itâs done.
Thankyou titaniumarum for voicing exactly what i was thinking. Whenever something like this happens (ie, the Arcade Fire/Kelly Clarkson thing), the mini Perez Hiltons always respond with the same 'no-ones ever heard of you, so shut up', even for something as small as simply voicing their concern over twitter.
Maybe, if instead of furrowing your brows and mashing your keyboards, you bothered to take the time to actually know what you're talking about, you'd find out that quite alot of people actually have heard of Beach House, including Jay-Z and Beyonce, the heads of state of your musical dictatorship.
Capitol Records Twit Katy Perry to be sued by Grammy Voting BMI Published Artist Simon Dylan Ian Xander Thunder for what amounts to stolen melodies from songs, words, and musical riffs already copyrighted, RIAA & BMI protected, and 2008 Grammy accepted submissions!
Katy Perry and her illegal Copyright Infringement of the Simon Thunder song "Cali(fornia) Girl"
Current mood: shocked
Category: Music
Whoever stole/wrote, produced, arranged, recorded, mixed, played, and party to your song "California Gurls" has infringed on my melody, lyrics, and musical riffs from my "Cali(fornia) Girl" song which was written long ago and copyrighted for recorded release in 2007-2008. My song was listed in many categories on 2008 Grammy list! Seriously, don't you folks have anything else to do besides rip other artists off!!!
If you want to pursue this illegal action and be sued let me know?? If you are not smart enough or musically proficient enough to hear it in the mix. I will be happy to help educate and school you!!
Here is the link for copyright infringement! It is my main two melodical riffs from my song underlying and overlaid on the her song! That is all I found so far!!! No doubt her upcoming album will be scrutinized for more theft of my musical and lyrical property! Seriously, to sing the same words from my song on the same melody from my song! How utterly impudent! How lame!!! A hook melody is the main part of every song the soul and identity of it! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_infringement
Songwriters for Katy Perry theft of my Simon Thunder melody from my "Cali(fornia) Girl" song:
Broadus, Cordazar Calvin; Gottwald, Lucasz ; Levin, Benjamin; Max; Martin; Mckee, Bonnie; Perry, Katy affiliated with Capitol Records/Interscope!
Link to first accusation of katy Perry borrowing something leading towards dishonorable and unethical with the possibilty of theft and unoriginal desperation to be more than she is http://www.posh24.com/katy_perry/is_katy_perry_a_thief
This time she went to far! People who flirt with unethical behavior eventually run out of luck or the mercy and grace afforded to them to learn before they get metaphorically smacked and taught a lesson buy the legal system because the messed with the wrong person! l get busted! I promise! Stay tuned!
Posted to twitter and my updates on May 24, 2010:
Your a hitmaker when Katy Perry and company try to steal your melodies in your Copyrighted BMI Published song. No doubt! She will get sued!
posted new blog entries: The NARAS sponsored "Performance Rights Act" and other pertinent issues. and Katy Perry and her illegal Copyright Infringement of Simon Thunder song "Cali(fornia) Girl"!
My brief note to Grammy corporate:
Perhaps, you folks might want to take some action of your own with Ms. Katy Perry and writing team/producers/the label etc. It is quite obvious if you are a musical person, but to do it such a blatant fashion is just really low! I mean to completely disregard my Grammy accomplishments as a Grammy Voting Member and Artist! Regarding what? Well, how about that she/they swiped a couple of my main melodies/concept from my "Cali(fornia) Girl" song and put them into her "California Gurlz" song. I mean really, is it necessary to educate every unethical ignoramus by engaging in a ugly lawsuit! I willingly pursued being a voting member with specific independent agendas that benefit the greater whole. Where as Katy Perry membership was handed to her after her corporate record label lobbies to get her nominated. So, if you care enough I would appreciate your efforts and help in avoiding a potentially nasty protracted legal event! I really detest and find it quite deplorable to even be in this situation and would not be if katy Perry had an inkling of what it means to be ethical in business or life. I suppose some people think they can get away with anything. I am informing you that if I start the ball rolling permanently on this situation. I will not yield no matter the cost and time involved. I am quite adept at finding creative legal ways to resolve a myriad of tasks that might fatigue the mind and patience of others. I have no doubt that if I pursue other avenues some lawyer who really wants to make a career off this will jump at the chance. However, I already have people in place to begin pursuing this resolution to this matter. I have paused momentarily only because it will impact many and wanted to take the away defensive excuse that I did not try to resolve more peaceably by offering a metaphorical olive branch. Have a lovely
Okay, just because Beach House is rightfully angered about Katy Perry's album name does not mean that you can claim they are using it as a publicity stunt or call them "crybabies" just because you are too ignorant to actually try to keep up with and listen to other kinds of music.
If you had any actual interest in underground or alternative media, you would already know that Beach House's release was one of the most highly acclaimed albums this year, and that Pitchfork, a very big name in the indie music industry (despite how cynical I am about them), had named their debut album as one of the best albums of 2006.
So stop using your ignorance as a reason to belittle a very talented band and instead use this as an opportunity to maybe expand your horizons beyond people who don't really have any talent, such as Katy Perry. Frankly, I don't see how Beach House is somehow riding on this "publicity stunt" when all they did was post one comment on their twitter, which would only be viewed by fans of the band anyway. It's not like they are the ones who wrote this article.
But you know who did write this article? A Beach House fan who cares enough about musical integrity to try and stand up for something that is actually of worth, about something they like, enjoy and respect. Last time I checked, actually standing up for good music was not a publicity stunt but a respectable action.
No fewer than 20 recordings over the last three decades called "teenage dream' or "teenage dreamers" or something similar. Several were copyrighted.
Katy Perry is a cute, likeable young artist. Will she be considered great someday? Time will tell. Beach House sound like crybabies. They may actually get some listeners who buy their album by mistake.
All this band "Beach House" is trying to do is steal Katy's thunder to get some free publicity. Before this article how many of you ever heard of Beach House?
Now how many heard of Katy Perry? Someone commented they only knew about Katy's music because "The crappy radio stations play her music so much." Well that tends to happen when your music is requested ten thousand times a day or more and you are sitting on a platinum album. And who out there searches for or buys an album by title instead of artist. Hey Beach House how many times has your music been played on one of those so called crappy radio stations. Don't you wish you were to busy with your own music and live performances to be worried about something so trivial. And on a lighter note B.H. instead of writing a song called "I Kiss A Girl" unless you are trying to claim that you like Katy have experimented with something new you might want to try using a subject you have experience with it tends to be a more believable story line for a song.
At least you did succeed in one thing. By the look of these postings at least five more people now know your band exists. And to think it only took accusing a real artist of wrong doing to accomplish that. You should at least thank Katy for that. Kudos you wanna be Jack Ass.
Oh please Beach House needs to get over it. People have been writing songs and releasing LP's, Cassettes, and CD's for years, a similar name is going to happen eventually.
Sorry Beach House I never heard of you until and thats only because of Katy Perry. I think you need to thank her
I am stating what I know. I am not a fan but I enjoy some of her music. And that's her opinion. lol she makes stupid comments but has one of the best personalities out there. ;D

I think she's a brilliant artist. And loves her fans and family.
So you're telling me, I can't write a song called I kissed a girl without it being plagiarized? No one bought the writes.
Also with Teen Dream/Teenage Dream. It's vague enough that it will be done loads of times.
Just some old band who are back int he spotlight for claiming this.
@Rylan You fanbots aren't helping make this any better. She's more of a pinup girl than an artist. She makes Marilyn Monroe look like Meryl Streep by comparison. And she talks like an idiot, especially believing that Madonna never drank, smoked or did drugs.
