How to Destroy Angels Premiere New Video for 'The Space in Between'

When Trent Reznor and Mariqueen Maandig announced the formation of their new band, How to Destroy Angels, everyone wondered what the two would come up with. A few weeks ago, the new group released their first track, 'A Drowning,' and now they've come out with their first video, a clip for 'The Space in Between.'Unlike the electronic sound of 'A Drowning,' this track has a dark and slightly evil feel that's paired with an even darker video. In it, the group lies dead in a dingy room with flames slowly engulfing them as the song progresses. Nine Inch Nails fans will surely enjoy the familiar mix of disturbing imagery and haunting music in the video, which can be seen after the jump.

F**cking awesome! I just love that Trent's doing anything, everything the guy does is just awe-inspiring!
May 22 2010 at 3:26 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIâm wondering who has enough balls to put up with the shame and ridicule of being ociated with the live version of this band when they start to tour. Trent always burns bridges and heâs insulted nearly all the people heâs ever worked with over the years.
Justin-Meldal Johnson: HTDA sound isnât funky enough for him. Anyways, heâs workinâ for Tom Cruise and John Travolta now, conducting e-meter tests in Scientology headquarters. Even Trentâs cult status cannot compete with the resources of a real cult.
Jeordie White: Still busy embarrassing himself with Marilyn Manson and trying to get Goon Moon off the ground. Probably has too much Valtrex built up in his system to make it through âA Drowningâ without slipping into a coma.
Supposedly Robin Finck will play anything for a paycheck but he may still want to distance himself from this . Trent will be forced to do what he always does in that situation: blackmail him into joining the band. Trent and Rob probably have a back catalog of compromising photos from previous tours.
Aaron North: I really donât know what heâs doing right now. Is his band even together any more? Heâs not even on Buddyhead. Itâs like after anyone touches NIN theyâre cursed or something. Anyways, I canât see Aaron jumping around to HTDA material on stage. I think heâd rather go into the witness protection program. If he hasnât already. Really, whereâd the little midget go?
Atticus Ross: Heâs already a default member of the band though itâs difficult to tell whether or not he has a choice. You know those ankle bracelets that convicts wear when theyâre on probation? I think Trent locked one onto Atticus some years back and swallowed the key.
Alessandro Cortini: Trent was quoted aying. âAlessandro is one of the most miserable people I know.â Of course, this misery probably stemmed from being trapped in close quarters with Trent over several years. Great, then heâs the perfect choice to back Mariqueenâs miserable vocals with ambient, moody noise! HTDA may break new ground yet as the first band to ever have a member commit suicide while performing live.
Josh Freese: Josh is the only musician impervious to Trentâs bi-polar tantrums due to the fact that he is a robot. Everyone knows this is true, so donât be weird abou. There are probably multiple Josh units performing with multiple bands simultaneously in different parts of the world right was we speak. This means he canât use the excuse that heâs too busy. he can, however, use the excuse that he only plays with bands that are âgood.â
Ilan Rubin: Since Ilan never added anything extraordinary to NIN heâs a shoe-in for HTDAâs generic sound. Heâs an impressionable young lad with a brain ripe for brainwashing, much like Rob Sheridan ten years ago. Ilan will have a totally awesome time until someone sits him down one day and explains where babies come from. Then heâll never be able to look at Trent and Mariqueen the same way ever again.
Gary Numan, Peter Murphy, David Bowie, Peter Christopherson: One would hope these artists have enough sense to never pollute their reputations by becoming involved with HTDA.
Mariqueen Reznor: Of course sheâs got to go on tour with the band. Sheâs real talented at fiddling with Trentâs knob(s). And I hear she sings or something. An added plus: if she canât make it to the show you can just replace her with a corpse, as illustrated by the video, and no one will know the difference.
So we have our lineup!
Robin on Guitar, pink recorder, pan flute and âshrooms Atticus on programming, synths, and a leash
Alessandro on B and Buchla (until he kills himself and is replaced by Trent)
Ilan on drums until Trent decides heâs tired of him, throws a tantrum, abandons him on the side of the road in rural Idaho and replaces him with Justin Bieber.
Mariqueen doing vocals, Trent, and a bunch of roadies for drugs.
Trent losing his over technical glitches and a lot of empty seats.
To those who are wondering why Trent chose this random woman as the female lead vocalist, the reason is because it is his wife.
Doesn't answer the question "why" he put her on a project. We can all read, we saw her relation to him but thanks anyway. Just because my husband is a football player doesn't mean I'm fit to play on the field.

May 19 2010 at 4:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've never been so underwhelmed by anything related to NIN. The video's kinda cool but the song is lame. I don't get why the article says he formed a new band with this chick. Did he hold auditions or something? Was he trying to find someone obscure or undiscovered? I've never heard of this woman before and I'm not impressed. If he wanted a female singer there are lots of them out there who sing better than this.

Shut up, Trent.
Dear "Andy":
In which way is this work supposed to touch, reach or connect with me? Someone kill me and set me on fire! How should that make me feel? Not good for sure. Way too high expectations for a bland video and a bland song. If you can't bear the heat don't get in the kitchen!
To Andy,
If you like it, fine, if you don't, fine. I don't and that's our right as consumers. Doesn't matter how hard an artist worked on anything. It boils down to do you as the consumer like it. Lots of assumptions Andy. Silly assumptions actually. As a consumer I agree with Clint. I didn't feel her vocals and they didn't touch me, I don't like her voice. If it was meaningless and pointless to him that's his opinion. I feel like it's gory for the sake of being gory with no reason behind it and after hearing the vocals of the singer I'm not very interested in finding out.
You sound like a Fool attacking and assuming someone doesn't create things themselves because they don't agree with you. Just because an artist put in hard work-possibly-doesn't mean they are guaranteed everyone will like the output nor do they have the right to expect it.
Either you like it or you don't....you could have said, "this is not my cup of tea",....and Andy, you don't need to act so insulted because someone expresses their opinion.
May 18 2010 at 6:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOk. I gave the first song a chance with an open mind, didn't like it. Gave this song a chance didn't like it. The video was the only thing that made this song tolerable and that's not saying much given that the fire was the most interesting part of the whole thing. Without the video I would've fallen asleep to her voice. This woman's voice is uninspiring, dull, and drowns out. I guess I just expected Reznor's new project to be remarkable and with a good singer. Won't be buying the full length project. Seen and heard it before. I"m surprised he's picked such a subpar singer. How long is this guy going to play the dark role too? You get murdered, you get on fire, you're being shocking just for the sake of being shocking. There is no meaning to this or point.
May 17 2010 at 1:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt never ceases to amaze me how people who (I assume) don't create anything themselves, can be so casually dismissive of the hard work of artists. So quick to reduce that effort, calling it "meaningless" or "pointless". As this visual/audio experience goes out across the world, reaching millions more people than you ever will, who are you to say how many it will touch, and what meaning and connection each person will find in it?
May 17 2010 at 7:14 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI thought it was seductive; a murderous ballet to my ears. The video fit the mood of the song perfectly. Darkness is an essential tool to some; knees touching the floor, you shake as chills pulsate like razors throughout your body, a cold stone floats painfully in your chest, the cold steel radiates through the deepest recesses of your mind, as the hammer slides forward, time stands still, and then its as if the whole earth sunders around you, there was no thunderous bang; maybe I'm okay; but your floating in space, your throat tightens as you fall into darkness; no you think...you want to live...but its too late; we make choices, we live or die by them.
